QQ

<< < (2/3) > >>

kiwisteve:
I recently upgraded my QQ International to version 1.3. One of the new features is being able to highlight any of the previous text with the mouse, then getting an instant translation, without having to cut and paste anything. I find I hardly ever have to dive over to Google Translate or the other sites now.

Sorry, my information might be a little dated, as I dont use QQ anymore.

kiwisteve:
Also the mobile version of QQ only seems to be available in Chinese, but I've figured out the basics.

It can do audio and video, but you need a decent Android phone with a second front-facing camera and enough processor power to do video. My Samsung Note does it easy, but Anna's no-name entry-level Android phone struggles and the video is choppy when it works at all.

It has been great though for things like giving her a live tour of my house and workplace, as well as friends and family.

Kiwi. that is a great  idea. I remember walking around with my laptop trying to stay in range of the wifi to show Fiona where I live and the surrounding area. Technology is moving quickly. Years ago when I first went to China video conferences were unheard of. we would send photos back and forth using "high tech" fax machines.

I just got a new android phone and discovered by accident the second front facing camera. I am anxious to try it out to see the quality of the video. If it is good I will purchase another to send home to mother.

[1] Early on the the piece, learn how to take screen shots of your
conversation, preferably date and time stamped. These can be
extraordinarily valuable when it comes to providing evidence to
Immigration about the duration and stature of your relationship.
It might also be worth using Yahoo, which is common in China,
at it provides a logged record of the text you are exchanging.

We did this, and even though my now wife was flat out behind the scenes using Google
translate, this did not show in the logged dialogue which was in English
( or more accurately, Chinglish) and readable as evidence by Immgration

[2] And it goes without saying, back up your evidence files, preferably
offsite. The reason I am actually saying it is that most folks don't.
Specially IT folks :-)

[3] I loaded QQ onto a Win XP system (AMD 3000, 1G ram,320HDD, not exactly
a slug ). It worked quite well, but my nearest and dearest did not understand
some of the english options, even with Mandarin IME installed.
So she just 'happened' to be talking to friends in CHina who knew ALL
about IT, and instructed her how to activate Remote Assist. All of a sudden the
entire HDD was being reformatted, and CHINESE WIndows and QQ  downloaded.
ByeBye all my carefully ripped FLAC files :-(

But the upshot is that the computer now runs much much slower - by a factor of 10 or so,
and does far more disc accessing. I presume this is because of some kind of intermediate interpreter.
Others more knowledgeable than me might have a deeper explanation.

So: Backup, and beware DIY computer experts from China

Cheers
David K
