Once married to a Chinese National, can you work there legally?
Irishman:
If you marry a Chinese lady does this automatically entitle you to seek work there? Also , do you do decide to live there with your beloved do you have to make annual trips to HK to renew your visa?
Finally one for Shark Mike, how do the schools etc view foreigners looking for TEFL jobs there if they are living with and married to a Chinese lady?
China Shark:
You are not necessarily entitled to work yet you can apply for the permanent residency permit like I have and then you can work with that. You could do the ritual pilmgrimilges that many of the expatriots who are on a mutiple entry tourist visa. I'de advise against there for fear of being caught by the authorities teaching without a legitimate visa or residency permit. If they really want to screw you they could theoretically ban you from China. Govt. don't play over here. To be honest they really aren't concerned about your personal live just as long as you teach the students probably. Ambigious would be the best way to describe it, students love it when you have a Chinese girlfriend or wife. Best bet if you're hedging your bets is next trip start really looking for work and start interviewing to see what would best suit the needs of you and your girl. You really have to be in country to make the contacts and start networking. Yes, I got my job prior to leaving but that was more of a feeling safe issue about income to live off of.

Irishman:
Thanks Mike.
JimB:
Mike,
What about taxes? I have no idea.
China Shark:
Jim, taxes for what? Do you mean taxes from your income? Many training centers pay us off the books cash and we don't pay taxes. My private school gig just recently started making us pay 10% of our monthly income. Some schools make you pay taxes if you exceed making 10,000 a month. For the most part they really don't hassle expatiots too much because first of all they don't speak English and second of all it is too much of a pain in the neck to deal with. For the most part Chinese usually only hassle one another just like back in the states. Organized crime outfits only victimize other Asian outfits. Asians are funny that way.
