KUNMING - At least 29 people had been injured in the 5.1-magnitude earthquake that hit southwest China's Yunnan Province Thursday, local authorities said.
The earthquake struck at 12:56 p.m. in the area between Lufeng and Yuanmou. Its epicenter was located at 25.4 degrees north latitude and 101.9 degrees east longitude, at a depth of 16 km, according to China Earthquake Administration.
Six million yuan has been allocated as relief and 1,750 tents have been sent to the quake area.
Lufeng is known as China's largest source of dinosaur bones. Anthropoid at Lufeng dated back to eight million years ago. Homo Sapian fossils in Yuanmou, or Homo erectus yuanmouensis, dated back to some 1.7 million years ago.
No damages to the heritage sites have been reported as of Thursday night.
Yunnan's seismological bureau has detected 14 aftershocks of the quake with a highest magnitude of 2.9, said Gu Yishan, an official with the bureau.
Rescue work is going on, Gu added.
Earthquakes measuring 5 degrees or above on the Richter scale frequently hit the region in history, said Gu.

i also recieved calls from some friends because they were also
getting confused with Hunan and Yunan.
1500 houses were damaged 100 schools 72 clinics and they are
in the process of knocking down houses and buildings that they
feel are in danger of collapsing.
another quite big one also hit in Tibet but the area is pretty
remote and lightly populated so there were no damages or

Yes Willy, The one in Chile just had a 10 minute segment on the morning TV channel along with them interviewing someone that was there. As I write this they are doing another segment on it? (8:30 AM here) "Breaking News". On China's? Nothing, not a word on TV or on the Web news on my Yahoo homepage.

also had one in Okinawa to along with the one in Chile
along with 2 floating icebergs some 63 and 70 miles big
that just seperated and are floating along

Probably because the Chinese authorities didn't get a very good press from the last quake disaster in the wold news. It's the one thing they can't handle too well, in their eyes it's a loss of face, so the next time... better to say nothing and report nothing!! And hope it all goes away...lol!!!!

Saw the Hong Kong news last night - long spot on Chile earthquake - shorter report on Japan earthquake - nothing on China one.

Chile got the big one, China got a small one compared with chile, how you gona beat 8.8 ? Kind of like "earth olympics" I didn't know about iceburgs. Those are big,
and didn't know about Japan ether. Supposed to get sunami's everywhere. Very sad, lots of people dead, dieing or injured. Chinese are very good with disaster's they
are set up for it. Come to think of it, we have had quite a few since the first of the year, what's up with this? The dog misunderstood. He said SIT not SHIT but the
dog does not know Chinese...It's an American Dog and does not have a translator....:icon_cheesygrin:
