Title: Decent Wage in Shanghai?
Post by: Axiom on June 17, 2011, 01:22:47 am
You folks sick of me yet? ;)

I might have a decent job offer in Shanghai, but one of the questions I was asked is "any minimum your salary expectation?"

What is a decent wage for a tech job in ShangHai?

Thanks again!

Sounds like a bargaining tactic... tell them your rock bottom and they then won't go any higher than that...

Come back at them with "tell me what you think I am worth, and I'll tell you if I'm happy working on that"

Remember, you're Haggling there now.You want to know the top dollar they are willing to part with so you can get that, they want to know the very least they can spend on you and still have you working for them...

Maybe you should try and link up with Paul Todd  ex mod - ex member I think.  He is a partner in a school opening soon in Shanghai.

This is common, happened to me too. And like said, you give them your rock bottom they aint gonna give u a cent more. Living in Shanghai is not the cheapest you have to take that into account as well and what other benefits do they offer. And also, did you mean "TECH" job or "TEACH" job. For the first one, i would start out no lower then 20.000rmb/month. If its teaching it is not my area of expertise and others here should be able to give better advice.

Actually, its a tech job. A game company there is looking for testers for some upcoming games.

Great way to get my foot in the door.

Then start demanding around 20k/month, you will most likely have to go down from there. How much is pretty much up to where their "threshold of pain in the butt" lies and your negotiation skills. One thing you need to understand when it comes to China and Chinese employers is that when it comes to negotiations dont be too soft, if they sense it (and they do) they will use it.

NO NO NO! Never cross your finger, it makes it harder to get the knuckledusters on. Forget Iron Fists in Velvet Gloves crap... you want Tungsten Fists in Spiked Steel Gloves...

Good luck mate :D
