Title: What more do I need?
Post by: Willy The Londoner on January 18, 2010, 10:36:05 am
This is posting 1000 and so it is a key note time to announce that as from Monday 25th January 2010 I will no longer be a care free single man.

I have received all my paperwork from the British Consulate in Guangzhou.  Photos taken. The travel arrangements have been made for us to get to Hengyang by Car, by train and probably rickshaw as well.  The Presidents Suite has been booked at a Five Star hotel for 5 days.

Angels family members are also making arrangements to be in the City to start the Chinese New Year early and I have drawn 237 RMB from the bank to pay for it all.  Hope that is enough!!!! Still if I have to add 20 or 30 or even 50 rmb's to that total then what the heck - I doubt if I have time in my life to ever marry again:icon_cool:

Have I forgotten anything?  What more do I need?

Willy

You are going to get there first, Willy. I am thinking of the race to the South Pole and it seems that you are Amundsen and I am Scott. Now that I know you will beat me there, one wonders whether whether it is worthwhile continuing on to my destination . . . *laughs*

I will be married on the following Monday, so best wishes for the future and my congratulations!

After so long together already, there is no reason to think that it will not turn out very well. Yours is more of the same happiness and so many more days like this seem assured.

I am very pleased for you. One day we will catch up. Though I think it will be a  long time before my dear woman will permit me a visit to Zhuhai . . . maybe when hell freezes over *laughs*

Willy,

Congratulations to you and Mrs Willy! On you upcoming Wedding.:icon_cheesygrin:

Also thank you for your 1000 postings, I have read at lot of the various posting at the forum and it has been a real pleasure to have encountered some of your really funny comments, some levity and some serious topics that you have brought to our computers. Thanks Willy!

Like the others hear it would be really nice to see you postings and pictures of your wedding.:icon_wink:

Maybe if you have trouble getting enough Viagra for the honeymoon you might want to try Cialis. (The Honeymoon version of Viagara, lasts 2 or 3 days per tablet) Then you can relax after that for a few days.:P

I sincerely wish you and your prospective new bride have a wonderful wedding and that the both of you have long, happy and prosperous life in the future.

Bye for now, have a great day Willy

Hehe I've got a different problem, my younger day's suits fit (the one or two I did not throw out yet), just the more recent ones are way too large now :icon_sad:, I'm back to my original weight :icon_mrgreen: .

But Willy, suit design changed a lot in the new millenium, careful with those old rags :D Your future wife might run into Rob's arms in the end ... :P

Glad you reminded me of that Ted. I have arrived in Hengyang and I am knackered.  The train journey was long, especially as it did not go over 30 miles an hour.  No wonder the high speed train can knock hours off of a journey.

And SOFT SLEEPERS there are no such things.  6 bunks in a cubical no bigger than my wardrobe. a thin solid mattress with a  half inch of foam or something similar on top.  God help those who went for hard seats. Very young child in our cubicle probably broke her arm trying to climb the ladders and she cried for about 4 hours and ours was the first stop where she could be taken off the train.  But the worst part was Guangzhou railway station.   Was in a slow moving queue for 40 minutes before even getting into the station.  Glad we got out tickets the other day as the ticket office queues were like 100 yards long at each window.

And when I say the waiting rooms were heaving they were.  Fortunately we were at the end of a queue in teh waiting room for the train.  When suddenly a load hailer came round and directed every one to turn around and go through the entrance behind us.  That put us to teh front of the queue.  No need to walk at all, 2000 fellow travellers turned and lifted us straight through the barriers.   If this is three weeks before the new year holidays then God helpany of you travelling in China during that time.

Going to bed now and hope the rest of my stay is much more enjoyable..

Willy

Just a word of warning.  If any one goes to Hengyang and your out walking one night and you hear what sounds like an Icecream vans chimes approaching then do not stand on the edge of the kerb wanting to buy one with a chocolate flake on top.    I did, and just like a rabbit I saw the bright lights approaching and was transfixed.   I was still standing there after the lorry had passed and had spread across the road and teh footpath a liberal scattering of grit and water and not just the footpatch  us to from waist downwards.  Lucky we was only 100 yeards from the hotel so straight back to get cleaned up.

What more do I need?  That is the heading to this thread - well I can give one answer - I need a lot of luck and bucketful of patience!  It appears that after spending  the weekend in Hengyang then that was not the place where the marriage was supposed to take place.  So as dawn breaks we are off to a place that is described to me as being named 'Heng County South', this is my fiancees home town and it is where she wants to marry.  Only after have had one hell of a journey for about hour or so we then find it was the place she had WANTED to marry.  The office in this town does not do marriages where a foreigner is involved!!!

(Not sure what the locals had got up to at the weekend but there was about 100 couples trying to register a marriage in this little town. )

We were told that we had to return to Hengyang.  Thankfully this time the driver treated the road with a bit more respect.  However having arrived back in Hengyang we then found that we would have to go to Changsha as that is the nearest place that register marriages involving foreigners!

But whilst still in Hengyang they checked my fiances papers and it was discovered that there was a fault in her Household Register book that meant it was were still showing her as still married!  So now she has gone of on a two hour each way bus ride with her 20 year old son to the Public Security Bureau in another town to get that changed and if they do it today then MAYBE and I say MAYBE we may get to Chagsha tomorrow to register the marriage.

They said that a bus fare is 6 yuan each way for each person because she refused to pay the 100 yuan for a taxi.   I told her then if she wanted to save such a little money on such a special occasion then she could save even more as I was not going.   So off they have gone and when they return in four or five hours I really do not expect to be going to Changsha tomorrow and could well be heading back to Zhongshan instead and still single.

Well I got at least another 4 hours before they get back  so how can I spend it here  - so maybe over to KFC for a coffee ?  At least in Zhongshan I knew where to go for a massage!!!

Only consolation is if we do eventually get to Changsha at least we can travel back to Guangzhou by the high speed train.

Oh well every cloud has a silver lining.

Willy

yes...Martin there are a few of us! Willy if you are here, in Changsha, and haven't picked up the red book, bring a bag of candies and pick up a few of them gold box cig's...they work great with getting you in and out of marriage place quicker! We were laughing at the poor souls that had to wait longer than us...bribes are always welcomed here!

Well at last we Bloody well done it.  Married at last - Not only did we take candy and cigarettes for the staff we also had to be generous to the police guard on the gate so that he would could get in and for him to tell us which floor to go to.

Maybe the gifts may not have been needed as we was the only ones there.  Mind you it was raining!!!

All the papers were accepted and the only problem was that our photo was a 1/4 inch to large so we had to have then redone in the special photo room.

Back to the hotel - to get out of the rain of course!!!!!!

Tomorrow we return to Zhongshan but as my treat we are travelling from Changsha to Guangzhou by the high speed train.  Costing about 650 rmb for the two of us but just wanted to see what it is like.

Vince cannot find the 'whose your mate' page so can you change mine to MARRIED!

Congratz!!!  You know what they say "no pain, no gain."  Willy, you gain outweighs the pain.  Hope the rest of your journey is beyond your expectation.  Hope to see you in April.

Shaun

Congrats Willy, hope the train ride was all you were hoping it to be!

Its funny when Sunny and I get married its via the high speed train to Wuhan or a plane, both are about the same price - so of course I want to go on the fast train.
Sunny just doesn't get it!

There is no time to sleep on the fast train. Blink and you're there.
Willy, she has made an honest man of you.
I should have realised when my lady and I went to the Changsha marriage office in December, that it was for the same reason that you went. It would have saved you having to go to Hengyang if I'd realsed. Oh well.

Wonder what it's like going over 200 mph on land?

I used to do that every night Rocky - sometimes twice in my youth!!!  It not the speed that's the problem it the suddenly arriving at the end of the track before you are ready for it that was the problem!!!

Now that bullet train is something different.  The journey from Guangzhou to Changsha via a stop at Hengyang was some 8 1/2 hours in time spent on the 'soft seat' sleeper train.   The journey back by the new fast train took just 2 hours and 5 minutes and that included two stops on that journey.    The cost was 320 rmb each.  The stations on this line are all brand new and you can get an idea of what the new Changsha station looks like.  Bright and airy and lots of seating - bet next week they will all be filled.

All signs are in Both Chinese and English as is the announcements.  The platforms are clearly marked and you can only actually go onto the platform about 5 minutes befor the train arrives.

It is a long train and you are allocated a carriage and a seat number and you cannot sit anyone other than that numbered seat in the correct carriage.  There is only one door on and off for each carriage.

The train is long and I believe there are twenty carriages at least.  But on the edge of the platforms - again in Chinese and English are markings where each carriage should stop.

When you are allowed onto the platform there is an announcement made that says 'stand in line at the carrioage number you are allocated'.

And I must say I have never seen such orderly queues in my life.  No pushing or shoving here - everyone queue up and takes there turn.   Maybe because police travel on every one of these trains.

If you us ethe train make sur eyou are on the platform shortly after they announce that you can - the train may be at the styation for five minutes or more and that can include one or two minutes after the doors have closed - but once the doors have been closed they are not opened and I saw several people who left it too late and could not get on the train.

In the cars there is a good information system that regularly gives you speed readings - the fastest we went was 346 kph.  But because the countryside is so open you do not have a sense of travelling that fast - that is until you reach a tunnel and you soon notice it then.

The journey is very smooth and you have aircraft type seat that you can stretch back on.

A cleaner cam through the car at least four time on the journey and cleaned the floor with a little  broom.
It is easy to get to sleep on this train with no excessive noise and no vibration and shaking and rattling.

About 2 miles before a station it is announced on screen and over the speakers and it gives you plenty of time to get your cases together.

One thing to remember that the stations for these trains are well outside of the cities.   In Changsha it cost 30 rmb to travel by taxi from the main railway station to the high speed station.  And when you get to Guangzhou it costs 130 rmb (on the meter) to get from the North station to the main East station and Bus station.

I think that I would prefer to travel by this train than to fly if this alternative was available.

I've done 155 mph but I was driving so I wasn't relaxing watching out the window. I was watching the speedo making sure the needle didn't break off (had a post on it). Could have gone faster. :icon_biggrin: I love things with speed, always did. It's almost the same as any high speed but the slightest wrong move and your gone. On a rail? It must be easier then driving.

Wow, great photos. You will make a nice adoptive mom and pop for me, there's no way my real parents will make it to my Chinese wedding!

Er, Changsha station looks very nice but is this even the same country that Wuhan Hankou station is in?

The travel process sounds like the Japanese Shinkansens. Actually most Japanese trains have the orderly queues in front of where the doors will be when the train arrives. I hope the new trains are as interesting to travel on as the existing old diesel operated services.

Actually I see they are building a new station in Yichang, but I need to find out if there is a connection from Changsha or Wuhan. My lady claims to not know anything about the new bullet train station they're building in Yichang, but the the station is so far from the city centre that I guess it's well hidden lol.

Vince the only time I went that fast (and faster) was in the navy on a Phatom and you could not see much, specially with the afterburners on.  Scared the crap out of me.

On that train willy, at that speed, I doubt you got to see any sights, just blur.  Wow that is fast for a train.  Is it on rails or magnetic rail?
Like BART out in SF.  Got 3 rails and is electric.

rockycoon,

There overhead catenary fed electric trains, 3rd rail pick-up can't cope with these sort of speeds.
Basically these trains are very similar to those found in France and Germany. French and German companies are involved in the design and supply of technology for China's so-called bullet trains along with Japanese companies.

The First Bullet/high speed train scheduled service in China was in i think 2003/4, many have since come on line, and the programme as far as i can remember continues through to 2020, but will probably be ongoing after that date, albeit at a slower pace. The highest speed trains in China are 430 km/h
and i believe China holds the highest world train speed record....

What'd I miss, what'd I miss?

Sorry for being late, too busy with the ladies I guess ...

CONGRATULATIONS! To you and Mrs Willy of course, I hope you two will be happy for a multiple of the initially planned engagement period!

Oh for the train geeks :icon_cheesygrin::

World speed record for a train on rails is the French TGV with 574,8 km/h on April 3rd, 2007. AND IF there were not so many bloody strikes over here those things would actually be on time too. Unlike Changsha and GZ, the train stations for TGV are mostly downtown, so it beats flying by a milestone. Paris - Marseille in 3.5 hours, you can't do it with a plane between check-in, queuing, flying, waiting for luggage + transfer on both sides. The Chinese have the highest average production speed record (as in usual service with passengers)

Pic of the record, notice the dust in the back, allergies anyone? :icon_cheesygrin: No passenger cars either ...

Thanks to all who sent their wishes to my wife and I.  It does not seem like I have been living here for 7 months now.

Well it is down to real family life now.  Arrived home from Changsha and found that Mrs Willy's father had made the trip from Hunan to attend a grandaughters wedding.  So he has stayed with us for three nights.  83 and very lively - I hope that i am that good when (if) I get to that age.  (Just wish when he got up at about three every morning he would not flush the toilet.)

Now tomorrow we are off to Shenzhen for a couple of days to attend the elder sisters, youngest daughters wedding.

Just need to sort out the Public Security Bureau official in Hengyang who was obviously looking for a back hander to issue a passport to my wife and all will be good.   Lucky she is not wanting one to move to UK just want to spend a couple of weeks there later this year visiting my sisters and friends.  So there is no rush.

Com'on you UK members own up - who got a Blue Peter badge for train spotting?    Not you Rob - we know that you did not get yours until you was way past 40:icon_cheesygrin::icon_cheesygrin:

What more do I need?   Been married for less than one week and been told that I have to return to the UK very soon to sort out a financial problem.
I have encountered problems overnight and may have to return to the UK for about ten days.

Someone somewhere has used my debit card number.  I went on line last night as saw that I had £145 less in my travelling account than I thought I had.  Now sometimes I do forget that I have a payment due back in UK but this morning I see that I have no available money to draw out at all and there I was in Shenzhen for a family wedding.  Bit embarrassing having to ask the groom for your red envelope back so you can get home!!!

Telephoned the bank and they cancelled both my debit cards as we was not certain about the second.

However this means that I have no means of withdrawing money from the ATM here.  So following discussions with teh bank It was decided that the best thing was for them to supply a replacement debit card and retain it at my the bank for me to collect in London.  I can then also make arrangements to transfer a regular amount from London to my Chinese bank.

Because my Chinese address is not registered with teh bank they cannot courier a replacement to me.

But I also need to renew my visa so am going to the Public Security Bureau tomorrow to do that but it can take up to 5 days.   I will not go for a flight until I have it and then it will be so close to Chinese new year that prices will be sky high.

So probably looking at the end of Febuary beginning of march to make the trip.  I have several thousands rmb in our account here so in the short term it will not be too much of a problem.

But probably should have done these financial arrangement a long time ago.

The amount of money they have taken or if the bank stop the paymnets in time, may have taken in nominal less than 6000 rmb but it is the inconvenience - and this is my honeymoon!!

These things are sent to try us.

Willy

Just bad timing Willy. You have to go back to get pickup a new debit card? Isn't there another way? Maybe they can send it to the embassy and you show ID to receive it?

I also need to make arrangements to have regular money paid direct - bank to bank which would then do away with such an occurence causing so many problems again and that I can only do from London. Our Chinese bank card cannot be used outside teh banks atm and as you cannot use it elsewhere it is unlikely to be fraudulently used. I willl pick up two debit cards on two UK  accounts so I always have one in an emergency but these are only used to withdraw extra cash that comes my way via my internet business.

Plus I got another large suitcase load that I can bring back with me.  And at only around £330 for a trip it is not too bad.  And I can crate up some other stuff that I cannot get into my luggage and arrange for it to be shipped over.  Then all I will have left in Britain will be memories.

Sorry to hear about this Willy.

But a week long marriage . . . well that's cause for celebration. Last time I checked you were thinking of returning on your own (of course, not seriously).

I think if you're going to be be married for years and years, then a small gap like this is like nothing. It's like any waiting: when you finally reach the end of that, you wonder what all the fuss was about *laughs*

I am glad that it wasn't worse.

Congratulations again!
