I've never seen a resolution number. my camera takes pictures at 1600x1200 and I cut 'em in half - 50% to 800x600 which seems to fit a lot better (I think). Does that mean 72 dots per inch or something?

Resolution is how many pixels your camera can support. Generally I tell people when they are taking pictures, take them at the best quality and biggest size you can get out of it. The thing to remember is you can always reduce the resolution (size) and quality (detail level) of the picture. But you can't raise the resolution or quality of the picture from something lower.
72dpi is part of the resolution of the image (it's been many moons since I had to explain this part). 72dpi is the standard for viewing on the web. For photo reprinting, you should aim higher.
Vince could probably explain this one better.

Vince,
You don't want a large poster of your lady? :icon_biggrin:
All kidding aside, you're right no-one needs anything really bigger than a 5MP, but then you also get bragging rights. :icon_biggrin: And like I said, you can always downsize the photo. You can't really upsize the photo once it's been taken (at least making it clear).
Exact opposite of cooking...you can always add more to the recipe, but you can't take out what's already been mixed.

Vince,
That is what you say to make yourself feel better. :icon_cheesygrin:

Now I am confused...:huh::huh:
Guess I'll just use the one out of the crackerjack box, I've been using...:s
Isn't 800 x 600 called EGA and above that VGA ?

My philosophy is to buy the best camera you can afford at the time...Before I had the S500 (CF camera) with 5MP...that one died and the guys at the various repair shops said it's not worth it to repair... so I got a 14MP next (mostly because it was a P&S with a real viewfinder instead of using the LCD screen). Now you look at Canon's lineup and only the really high end have a real viewfinder.
