Title: Ladies sense of humour
Post by: Nik on April 20, 2010, 07:20:11 am
Hi - I am fairly new to this...but quickly sense my somewhat Aussie sense of humour, which is slightly cynical and self deprecating, is going to get me into trouble. I could use some advice and education on how the ladies in China see things......

They have a great sense of Humour.  One girl friend I had took great pleasure in directing me into the ladies toilet until I got to know the Chinese sign for it.  Maybe she was after getting me arrested and deported.

Just got in to Chengdu from Singapore.......didnt have time for detailed post...will do it later.

But I just had to reply to this "humour" question.

Ming found it very difficult to work out my "Aussie dead-pan" humour, so I make myself remember when I try to be funny and smile with it...mostly works !!!

But I must share a moment of priceless humour that had me helpless with laughter....

Ming was seriously interested in Singapore, especially all the multitude of races and women of different ethnicity to her...she never before saw a Muslim, a Negro, or a blonde...only in movies.

But what disturbed her the most was "Honey, why have all Western Women got such big Bums" ???

Said David..."Because they eat too much "

Back came the reply that totally cracket me up !!!

" How can that be ??.......they dont eat with their Bums !!!!"

Gotta love 'em dont you :icon_cheesygrin::icon_cheesygrin:

Nik,

I think they are like any other woman.  Mine always tell me, "you always joking to me."  I ask her if it is a problem. She says no it is a sign that I love her.  An Willy you are absolutely right.  They will set you up for a joke.  I was at a restaurant with Peggy and two of her friends.  One spoke English very well.  As the waitress was setting up the table she poured something in my cup.  Peggy said with a smile, "drink."  I asked her what is is and the friend who spoke English said, "it is OK, you drink."  All three women began to laugh.  So I said, "You are laughing and none of you have drank yet,  What is it?"  The woman said, "It is an ancient Chinese herbal drink, I cannot remember the English name for it."  I looked at all three of them, smiled and drank all of it.  It looked black, almost like Guinness, but it was tea.  We all had a good laugh.  They also watched me eat with the chop sticks.  They got quite a bit of pleasure and of course I hammed it up a little.

Most I have met have a wonderful sense of humor.  I tell one more.  Ted you remember.

Peggy and I were visiting Sisi and Ted in Guangzhou.  Near the end of dinner the muscle in the back of my calf knotted up like a grapefruit and would not let go.  It happens when I am not taking my potassium like I should.  Sisi said she knew of a medicine that would help and we headed to the pharmacy.  The three of of were standing there talking and watching Sisi look for the medicine when Ted said, "Hey Shaun, did you see the sign?  Now is your chance, you can get Viagra here 5 for 99RMB."  Peggy without understanding what we were talking about said to Ted, "Thank you."  Ted and I were rolling on the floor with laughter.  Finally I explained to Peggy what Viagra was for.  She laughed but was embarrassed too.

explained what we were talking about. that was pretty funny
but poor Peggy was embarrassed as i think she thought that we
thought she was thinking of sex with you and that really embarrassed her

Shaun, you are a revealing person....:icon_cheesygrin:

By the way, Aussie and English humor is about the same.  It was explained as a "Dry" type of humor by a comedian on TV.  An Aussie will put a crock in bed with you,
The Englishmen will chuckle....

American humor, is more "wet" and to the point.  I don't know what he ment by that, but so much for speculation on the humor...lol

I didn't consider your post revealing in the slightest, you were just relaying an ongoing funny situation....

I had to think of what Peggy would think if she saw it.  Ted was right, for the first couple of days she was embarrassed though she laughed and then later began teasing me.  I really like the teasing part.  She likes have fun with our culture and language differences.  She will teach me a word and the next day I will say it to her.  She laughs a while then works with me as far a saying it.  Right now we are working on wo ah ni lo paw.  I am spelling phonetically because I do not know how to spell it.

So sorry guys, but you are missing the biggest issue we have with the language.  the four tones.  it is spelled.  w? ài n?  l?opo  ..  so learn the tones, it takes a lot of time and a keen ear.  and a heck of a lot of practice.  buzz

Talking about this subject . About a month after Qing arrived here with me . I called her from Work and (different Voice of course ) ask her if MR. Dusch was at Home ? She said No , he is at Work . I then ask , what is he doing at Work ? Shouldn't he be Home and answer the Phone ? She then realized it was me and started laughing ... you tricked me ! Of course , now she will not fall for these kind of calls no more . Even using a Woman's voice . We still laugh about this one .
Her favorite line is at night when going to sleep ; I let you sleep tonight !!! How kind , I do need my Rest too . hahaha

I got an "admire" mail which was different and had a funny start:

"Congratulations to you for having been chosen from thousands of men to be my future husband. Just kidding."

Well, it is the first time I have seen a joke in these "admiration" mails.

I am lucky indeed. Fiona loves to joke and tease and she likes practical jokes both receiving and seting me up for one. We keep each other laughing and sometime we have to quit because we cant breathe. She enjoys humor of all kinds and will laugh at all my  jokes. Sometimes I have to explain it in detail but once she gets it she starts laughing.

Ah. Yes this is indeed a interesting topic.
Humor with a language barrier can be very interesting thing.

Usually after some explaining I get my self understood haha. And then we laugh. But this is quite difficult thing to work out. Even if we can communicate every day things rather good, by using three different languages haha... The humor often gets lost because mandarin is not my native language or Finnish/English is not hers.

But she says that she likes my humor, and loves to know that I have a good sense of humor. Usually the jokes are somehow related to embarassing things.

Often when I learn a new word, and it has the same alphabets as a word I already know from before... I will mix them and she often has to think about my toneless sentences for some time before understanding haha. But when she does notice/understand my true meaning she always laughs.

Just as an example "bao bao bao bei er" haha... "cuddling my baby child" 抱抱宝贝儿. I am not sure if its 100% correct. But she knows the words and sentences that I know/have studied before. So she can usually guess rather easily what I'm trying to say.

Also she does not always remember the right words in Finnish/English, but gets the words close enough, so I understand her. But she makes some simple mistake with a letter or a few. So the word and sentence meaning changes totally. And sometimes the sentences become really funny. And after I explain why did I start to laugh so much, she is embarassed but also laughs. And says she will try to remember next time.

Hehe many things.
