Title: Important message for all current and future members
Post by: Martin on August 09, 2009, 10:17:27 pm
With all that has been going on lately with a certain member being banned, we wanted to post some things we have been working on.  I am posting them here for now, and they will be added to a sign up page when new members join.

Mods will be starting to use the warning level, should the need arise to sanction members who are not acting in good faith. The following is for you to understand what the various sanctions are.

-1 pts general warning for, vulgar or inappropriate language, ethnically-sexually-religiously degrading.

-2 pts personal or directed attacks of flaming toward any member, racially offensive.

-5 pts threats of violence or retribution directed toward any member.

Reported PM's do apply.

When a users warning level reaches 50% (5 points) - they loose posting privileges for a day. They can still post over PM.
When a users warning level reaches 75% (8 points) - they loose posting privileges for a week. They can still over PM.
When a users warning level reaches 100% (10 points) - they get banned for a month. They cannot log in, they cannot send PM's, they can only view publicly visible forums.

Just for clarification, no mod can simply ban someone from the site for no reason.  In some instances, a mod can ban, but then they have to let the other mods know, and a vote is taken by them.  If a majority of them reach a consensus, whatever way their decision goes, is the direction that is taken.  So when a majority vote is taken to remove a member, it is because the majority of the mods feel that the person in question is not serving the best interests of this group.

Here is some new information, and a guideline that the mods are using.

Martin...... Just a few questions for better understanding.

There is no choice to ban a member permanently, right? since the longest period of the ban is limited to one  month.

You and Irish dont participate in making a decision? Just the Mods?

Because its been clearly defined the preconditions and terms of the ban, there is no room for any individual decision of a Mod or the Majority of the Mods to ban someone?

What do you mean with a false name? Has it to do with the already banned members?

  Thanks

Darius, I think Martin refers to I.P adress which allows to know if any banned member tries to come back over here but with anything else than his original name, which is also banned ;)
if the I.P adress is blacklisted, so, there's no way (anyway) for the member to come back and to register here... except from anywhere else than the place where the I.P is blacklisted...

Hm...
Maybe am I wrong, maybe not.

Hi Darius.  Thanks for the questions.  Let me try to clear things up for you.

There is an option to ban a member permanently.  Should a member reach `100% warning level, the system will ban them for one month.  In the time,. the mods will be discussing the situation, and decide from there what to do.  If they vote to permanent ban, then this is what will happen.

In general, Irishman stays out of most votes.  There are times he gets involved.  As the admin, I stay out of all votes, unless there is a tie.  I might give my opinion, but I don't vote.

There is still room for an individual mod or even majority of mods to ban someone...but I would think that this would be under some sort of special circumstance.  Under normal conditions, a mod would not have to ban someone.

As far as what makes a false name, I will use a recent case, where a person signed up with the name 888.  Two different mods sent the persona a pm asking them to use a name.  Nothing changed, so a 24 hour ban was imposed.  Now, that being said, not all of our members use a common name, and I will use the example of mpo4747...in this case, the member often signs the end of his posts with his real name, so I know this member is Mike.  Because he signs with his name, I don't have a problem with it.  Using strictly numbers makes it very impersonal here.

If you have any other questions, please ask away.

Banning depends on the degree of the matter and who it is. In the beginning we had some that came in here just to start trouble. They're gone now. Banned for life. They weren't members of the forum they were just signed into it. The warnings are general. We have to account for the unusual. Like any forum there are rules to follow, just we were counting more on common sense. Now ALL knows there are rules to follow.

This "special" thread should "pop up" for any new member who sign up, I think.
It then would show them the rules to follow when being here.

Yes Sly but it will be a page to read before you sign up, not a pop up.

Martin...Its now clear how it works. Its more than fair. A month will be long time enough to calm down and correct the inappropriate behaviour if someone really sets a great store by being a part of this brotherhood.

Appreciate you, Irish and all the Mods doing an excellent job.

just an observation in terms of observing different forum accounts on same IP address.  here in Seattle,
there are tons of free wireless access points for folks to use.  I see folks parked and sitting outside local
libraries well after closing.  so same IP address, though prima facie violation, many not always be
so something to keep in mind.

No actually all online computers have a IP. There's a lot number assigned to your service provider and one of those numbers becomes yours. Just like a phone number. Even if you go to a WiFi (Starbucks etc) your number comes up so this is who they charge for the air use. The ones sitting outside libraries have IP numbers too. It's just stolen so not traceable to them. But if it was banned they have to steal another. Moving or using a different service changes the IP. Bouncing is another but your paying several services for this in several countries, a scammers favorite.

Guys.  I don't know what to write here, but I am getting complaints about people abusing the User Reputation Rating.  Sometimes you are going to get a negative reputation.  Deal with it.  Turning around and returning a negative rep to the person who gave you a negative reputation is childish, and unacceptable.  I am not going to name anyone's name here.  If you can't handle the getting something negative, leave the forum.  Things do tend to get rough around here at times.  People here tell it like it is.  If a bad reputation point is going to put you over the edge, then you are in the wrong place.

I have fixed the reputation points that I was told about.  In the future, any counter negative points that are uncalled for, will result in a warning being issued.

Oh my God - (Sorry is that classed as religeous or what.)   Figure out his new role? - does he even know he is in China?
Ted now a mod.  It like suggesting that Mao should be Pope.  I had no idea how low this group has sunk LOL :icon_cheesygrin:.   (How many points so far- lets see....)

Ok a few more to go.  As he is my son am I allowed to say that I will come over to GZ and give him a good thrashing if he gets his spelling wrong. (Must be half way now up the points ladder now).

Seriously - cannot think of a better man for the job.  He must have met more brothers than any other.  He  has hidden depths - Well they are there somewhere under that 215 lbs (your kidding Ted or are they US pounds?)

He should be Brotherhood Ambassador in China - OR BACman for short.

He has made some good contacts in GZ.  Good on yer Cobber.  Good for you mate. Well done Old Chap. Proud of yer Son.  Perhaps I am speaking for us all here.

Willy

You vote me to be banned and I'll tell Sisi on you!!!!!!

Do you have those tough Hakka women in GZ? When I was in Hong Kong I was astounded by this road repair bloke carrying a huge paving slab down the road, then I realised it was a woman :icon_cheesygrin:!

But yes, if you know of any cuties in the 28-32 age bracket (er, 21-32 would also be OK) then send me their QQ details. I think moving to your neck of the woods is feasible for me in a year or two. The motherland is nearly bankrupt so it would be good to get out. I know it gets hot there but I honestly felt 10 years younger in Hong Kong :icon_cool:.

sure just let me know when you want to come here. GZ is really nice.
the weather is terrific all year. yes it gets cold but only for 3 or 4 days at a time
the ladies are very beautiful and want to talk with westerners.
the food is terrific and from all over the world here.
you can get a good cup of coffee here  (very important for me)
the air quality is bad at times but manageable
easy to get around even with 13 million people:icon_cheesygrin:
always having events here from china and all the embassy's
which keeps it exciting and fresh

so when ever your ready come to Guangzhou

FYI, the forum has implemented a new rule.  I just wanted to advise you all, so there is no confusion later about this.  Starting immediately, we ask that all members only have one account.  We will start to delete accounts that are multi accounts.  If you wish to open a new account, then please delete your previous one.  It would also be a nice thing, should you open a new account, to let us know who you are.

The only exception to this rule is Irishman.  He has more than one account, and these accounts have specific uses when it comes to the maintenance of this forum.  It is obvious by his accounts who he is, as we all know him by more than one name (Irishman, Ronan, Muireadach).

Thanks to all of you in advance.

Martin

 A very sensible rule too....
I know of no other Forum of any respect, that allows it's Members more than one account, It leaves the Forum wide open to all kinds of abuse!!

With all the goings on recently maybe it is time to re-iterate the rules of this forum.

Maybe there is a full set of rules somewhere but I have yet to find them!  Perhaps someone can enlighten me.   All I have found is this thread that deals with points for misbehaviour.

I note that there is a list showing reasons for receiving 1, 2 and 5 points and also possible penalties when reaching 5 , 8 and 10 points.

In view of yesterdays banning then maybe the powers that be should consider publishing when a member receives points for misbehaviour.

I am not commenting on the recent banning but things would have possibly been less heated if, before the ban, it had been published that a member had been given warnings and at what level!

This way everything would be in the open and no one could get up and protest if a member continues in a way not suited to the majority.

I would suggest that it is not sufficient for a mod to say later that a member had been warned privately.  Privately in my book is not count in open court and the member who is banned would not be in a position to comment on that.

Publish and everyone would know, let it be in the open and not leave the suggestion that a person may have upset one or two members out of 400 odd!

Then maybe my email box would not be containing words such as 'Politburro' and other such inane comments.

I say this for the benefit of China Love and its members.

Willy

Thank you Dave,

I'm just the tea boy at the moment. I'll work my way up to ironing shirts, Then If I shine shoes for a while maybe they'll let me cook dumplings for the Lord King Martin. You think this is about moderating the forum but no it's really about defending the lordships dumpling empire . Each of his surfs/moderators has to supply at set number of dumplings every month or ....well, there are lady's here so I can't go into the details. Irish is his high sheriff and Maxx is the enforcer who regularly slaps us about if the dumpling supply is late. Oh I hear master is ring the bell again got to go.............yes master my wife is cooking more as we speak..................................................

Paul Todd,

I take it you are referring to the flowered shirts of Ted, the mighty ambassador of Guangzhou. (That sorta sounds like a movie title, doesn't it?) I have just had my first fried dumplings this past sunday. I will be up for them anytime but I my body would rather have the ones boiled in a soup. I had them at the Mandarin restaurant on Young street in Toronto celebrating my daughters new job. I know what all the fuss is about dumplings now.

I get to Toronto several times a month. I am retired. So far this month I have been there 3 times. Been to Guelph and Toronto about 7 or 8 times last month. I can get to Guelph and back and still have a 1/4 tank of gas left in the tank of the "BEE." And that is at 120+ kph with the a/c on! (went through a radar trap at hwy 40 too. He didn't even look up.) I usually keep the speed down to about 115 kph though. Anyways, I would be glad to meet anybody for dinner in Toronto. Just say when.

Due to some personal issues, Ted is no longer a mod.  This was a decision that I made, in an effort to keep this forum running in a consistent manner.  Ted has done a fantastic job as a moderator on the site, and I certainly hope he will continue to post on this site.  There is no plan at this time to replace him, although if that changes, I will advise that here.

I did not know where to put this, so I am going to write this here.  The point of this web page/forum, is to help out guys who are interested in marrying a Chinese woman.  Whether that help is in the form of helping them meet that special someone, to helping with the visa application, or anything in between, that is our purpose.  Some guys have done this journey from start to finish, while others are only starting out.  Some have been here for awhile, and for various reasons, have yet to make the journey.  Basically, we are all in different places in the journey at different times.

The point of this post, is that I have been made aware of a member being given a hard time, because he has chosen not to go to China as fast as others have gone.  Frankly, if I, or others have not gone over to China, its none of your fu***en business!  This is their journey to take, and not yours.  Whether someone goes after only a few letters, or chooses to take their time, and go at a later date, this journey is up to each individual.

If you are having difficulty accepting this, please feel free to quit.  Bottom line.

Just a question.  Not that this is a topic I expect to run aground on.  But say someone has a bad day, or week, or whatever.  Their level goes to a certain point.  Does this level go back up after it's dipped down.  Lets say someone gets to -5, because they hit a rough patch.  Do points drop off over time.  Like say one point a month?   Kind of like with the Drivers License here in the US.  You get a speeding ticket and you get ooooh say -3 points, then over time, with no violations (I think it's a year) a point drops off.  If you go a second year with no violations another point drops off.)  So in the case of the drivers license you can be back to a zero balance in there years.

Have the mods considered if this type of system might be in play?

just askin'

There are two systems in place...one is the reputation, and the other is the user warning.  The reputation is added or subtracted by members giving you a rating.  This rating does not change with time...only by members giving you a point, whether positive or negative.

The user warning is a tool for the mods.  If someone is having a bad day, and gets warnings from the mods, then it does recover itself after a few days.  I will be honest though, rarely is a member given a warning.

I recently noticed that I have a " -1 " on my reputation.  I'd like to find out what this is for,  did I break a rule or something, did I offend someone, how can I apologize for writing something offensive to someone if that's what happened. I don't know what I did wrong or what I did to someone so please , I need to make things right here so please help me do this. I never meant to offend anyone or break any rule on this website. I always want to do the right things and always be honest with everyone.
Thank you for your help.

Wilfred,

To be honest, I would ignore the reputation.  It really has no standing in our group here.  If you contribute positively, then you have nothing to be worried about.  There are some people who just target people who actually care about their "reputation" score.  I remember there was one user here (who shall remain nameless) who I often chewed out because he often bashed chinese people just because he wouldn't listen to our input and got taken advantage of (and that automatically made all chinese evil).  He gave myself and some other people negative reputation scores.  We ignored him and obviously you can see our scores eventually repaired itself.

If you are a help make this place a better place, then the people who read the articles and posts will ignore the negative reputation.  And eventually it'll improve.  Don't worry about it.

Thanks for the information and advice.

If someone has a problem with my post , I wish they would write to me so perhaps I can explain myself and apologize for offending that person.  Many times we get upset because of a misunderstanding by either parties. We should be able to be able to discuss things and communicate with each other in an open manner, I believe.

Thanks for your speedy response too. Wow.

The very best wishes and much happiness everyday to all of our relationships with our loved ones that we are married to or attached with but not married yet.
Wilfred

Wilfred,  I don't think anyone has a problem with your input.  It has always been positive that I have seen.  I'll give you one just for that.

Wilfred...

Like the others said to you, someone clicked on the negative reputation.  Possibly you wrote something that someone else did not agree with.  Unfortunately, with the current system, there is no way to know who clicked it, or why.  Because of that, I wouldn't give it another thought.  The reputation has nothing to do with breaking forum rules.  We don't use that method to let someone know...and if there was an issue, it would be addressed by PM, and not giving you a negative reputation.  Please, just ignore it, if the person who clicked it didn't let you know why they did this.  The reputation really has no meaning.

If I remember right the designers / maintainers (not Irish) wanted to do away with it. Guess they never got around to it?

Hi guys, with Paul Todd leaving us, we had a vacancy for a mod. Rhonald has agreed to take on this new role. Expect a new wave of puns to hit the forum.

Great now I need to start typing my posts with my Thesaurus and Dictionary handy, not to mention the Puntionary as well.

Congrats Rhonald, make sure you use the small whip until you are used to keeping us in line.  Do not want to hear that you have lashed yourself too hard after a few rums.

Congrats Rhonald.  The only trouble is will I be able to understand the moderators telling offs?  Your a brave man Rhonald.  The record for those in Green has not been too good in the past year.

Just hoping it would get a bit more lively on here.

There used to be lots of jokes, a bit of leg pulling, general banter. But there is a pigeon hole for all these now.

Not the same.

Gee I just hope he doesn't become the Donald Rumsfeld on this site.

Rumor has it that Rhon wanted first to have a rummage sale but instead decided to have a rummy tournament in the rumpus room.

And I'd better stop beore Rhon kicks me in the, you got it, the rump.    ;D
