Title: ...Our tastes in MUSIC
Post by: David5o on August 11, 2009, 04:38:57 pm
I thought i would be a little rest-bite if we had a Music Thread on the Forum, that we could take a little time out every now an then, to listen to other members tastes in music. Or to post a track/song that means or meant something to you, at sometime in your life.....

I personally have a diverse taste in Music, but not that keen on Classical.
If you post on this Thread, .... Then Post a song or a track, along with any comments!!!

My First Track, Takes me back to the First time i went to a live concert.
1974 i went to see these guy's in London, the video however isn't from that concert.  Oh, those were the day's ....Remember??  hahaha!!

David....
This should tell you just how diverse my taste in music is haha!!

I've been buying this groups records, for 20 years. I'm pretty sure that most of the Americans wont have heard of them. But they have toured in the states a few times , so maybe some of you do know them.

Wow, i don't even know where to begin with this one, i went to my first all night rave when i was 15 (please don't tell my mum!!!:icon_cheesygrin:) and that was 21 years ago now! since then i have pretty much enjoyed a huge range of different music interests, but this one always brings back good memories of driving back from somewhere after a good night with the sun rising over the horizon. Ahhh, i'm reminiscing already. :)

This is another group that i've been listening to for years,  Whenever i hear there music, my mind whisks me back to Jeddah Saudi Arabia... Funny how a particular song can do that isn't??....
If you've never heard of them, ...They are a Swedish Group, well know in the late 80's and 90's with several Album CD'S to there credit.. This just happens to be one of my favourite tracks.....

Roxette, now that takes me back to the 80's. Damn it, i almost managed to block that decade out until now...! I always wondered who bought their songs. :icon_cheesygrin: Hears another one that has meaning to me that i wont go into, Most people will now of the Jonny Cash version (rip) but i prefer the origional version written by Trent Reznor and performed by Nine Inch Nails on the downward spiral album, 1994. I could not find a version of that on Youtube, but here is Trent singing it a few years back.

A classic: A Flock Of Seagulls - I Ran (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uUjIA3Rt7gk)

OMG THE HAIR !!

I loved the garage bands of the 80's, also love most New Zealand bands, a brief selection:

Headless Chickens - Cruise Control (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SHpRnqjahg4&feature=PlayList&p=44FE761D0F211F59&index=2)
Steriogram - Walkie Talkie Man (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=asdN1jJw4EE&feature=PlayList&p=44FE761D0F211F59&index=15)
The Chills - Leather Jacket (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKWkK1tJxdw&feature=PlayList&p=44FE761D0F211F59&index=0)
-----------------------------------------------
Dave Dobbyn - Loyal (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N22Bcdc07p8&feature=related)
Dave Dobbyn - Slice of Heaven (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0pWejAnLUQ&feature=related)

Dave is pretty much a Kiwi icon. In 2001, after 25 years as a musician and songwriter, Dobbyn was given a rare, lifetime achievement award by the New Zealand recording industry. Instead of a speech, the managing director of Sony Music New Zealand just read out a list of song titles.

The list went on for some time: 'Beside You', 'Be Mine Tonight', 'Language', 'Outlook For Thursday', 'Loyal', 'Whaling', 'Kingdom Come', 'It Dawned On Me', 'Guilty', 'Devil You Know', 'Slice of Heaven', 'Magic What She Do', 'Oughta Be in Love' ...

These songs written by Dobbyn had moved people throughout the country. They were songs they had danced to with their first lover, songs they have married to, songs that have made them laugh and cry. These songs they have even played when burying their loved ones.

Well im gonna be the oddball one here.

I enjoy all views of music. cept old country and this new what they call it rap. Old rap i have alot of laughs with.

But my main is death or progressive metal. Nothing like hearing thrash in the morning to get the blood going. Cant understand a word they say at times. But the get up and go theory is definately there.

ok a few then. not my favs but i do listen to these groups.

Progrssive metal side

Tristania  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uje_RvacpS8

Inkubus Sukkubus  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nExv_mKM5po

Elvenking  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x9hPp_OHUHg

Blind Guardian  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azrKXvW5jVM

Then the dark side

Which i will not post. of course ya know why. He he he.

Then theres these for just relaxing

Tristram   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2evIg-aYw8

Yuriko  Only if she was real. The power she possesses. And yes there was many sleepless nights playing this game. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kr493_89eGY&feature=related

Oh last but not least. Love this video.

Had a long list but clickies didnt work :(

Morbid Angel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_av2dPzv7E&feature=related)
Metallica (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UKNaUe7Ijfg)
Tool (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UhjG47gtMCo)
Marilyn Manson (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eTcPIAewhMg)

Tool and Metallica are two of my favourite too. I just saw Tool for the 5th or 6th time last Wednesday and I'm going to see Metallica for the 8th or so time in late October!

My girl was asking me about the TOOL concert and wanted to know more about the band. I didn't think she'd like it because they're incredibly unique. She ended up downloaidng some of their tunes anyway and her favourite was the same song that got me and most of their fans into them...

Tool - Sober (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hglVqACd1C8)

Lately I've been into a lot of European Symphonic, Prog and Celtic/Folk Metal though.

SuidAkra - Dead Man's Reel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D3SXa0hnJrE) (instrumental Metal with Celtic overtones)

Interesting enough that same band played a show in Shenyang where my girl lives. She went to a music fest with all German bands but she doesn't think she saw them there.

SuidAkra - Live in Shenyang (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mMLMAE7lHy8)

Another band I've been getting really into is Nightwish. A Finnish symphonic metal band. They changed vocalist for their last album but the vocalist on all the earlier albums was an opera singer which gave the band quiet a unique  sound.

Nightwish - Phantom of the opera (Live) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8VgLKXD-BoY)

Anyway, it's probably stuff most others are not into but I love it and I have a really broad range of music taste anyway. Bring up music or hockey and you'll likely have a hard time shutting me up. :)

for me, my style has always been a very broad liking to music. I can take everything except rap and country is my lest favorite, although i did see Reba and John Micheal Montgomery in concert, so dont hold that against me.

While i was with my wife in China, she would each day play a long set of songs that in no time I became accustomed to, of course they're chinese pop songs, but I found myself desiring to listen to these songs very often so I copied em from her computer and brought em back home and to this day I still prefer them to my usual listening pleasures...

Go figure...

Same here, I love all sorts of music.  Usually something with a good beat, something new and fresh.

this link will probably get censored by youtube soon.

On a tamer note, I really enjoy All American Rejects (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l06M-dsQf3Q) as well.

A little history lesson about some the mentioned.

Iron butterfly: Although the name was changed as a joke (In the garden of Eden) whenever this song came on the radio it was common knowledge the DJ was either partying it up or having dinner.

Jimi Hendrix: I remember so well the beginnings, where his music was not played on the radio because it was deemed to loud? We had to buy his first album in was called the underground. It wasn't just one place, you had to go into the city (NYC) and ask for it. Now I laugh that I hear Jimi's music in commercials and such.

After came Led Zeppelin and many others.

Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention. Yes, that was the name. Who was made up from band members of....The Turtles (So Happy Together) It was always so funny to see how they went from bubble gum music to Frank Zappa's type music.

And "head bangers"? No this came later in the 80's with Punk Rock.

Is there anyone out there that doesn't like Dire Straits ??...If there is, i've never met one yet!! Mark Knoppler can and does make that guitar do anything he wants it to do for him. Watched these guys live in Berlin, i have never seen a better live band anywhere, they sound as good live as in a studio. I can't think a single song from this band, that i can say i dislike. I've chosen Sultans of Swing, because it is one of there best songs. There are better versions out there, but this one will do for now ....

Vince,

No, there not still around, but the music is, and probably will be long after you and I are long gone. ...haha!!
They had a unique sound, you knew who was playing as soon as you hear the music. Yeah , the guy above can play that guitar too....

Another band i had lots of time for was Queen, (with another well accomplished guitar player!). This was another rare breed of band that sounded as good on stage as they did in a studio... I have chosen the Classic
Bohemian Rhapsody, it has a great guitar section. ...haha!! This clip is a live performance, how many bands can sound this good live ???

From the 80's and the so called romantic labeled bands, comes Duran Duran. I like most of there stuff but went for RIO, because of the video. Personally, if we're talking of a great guitarist, i don't think anyone can beat Steve Vai, I chose the 'duel' from the film crossroads, as Steve Vai plays both parts. Ralph Macchio just mimes his part. See what you think, it's pretty damn good! :)

Yeah, you brought a few memories there for me too. One of my old fav's was ''Don't Stop Beliving'' by Journey, some real good guitar work in that without going O.T.T. Anyway, i included here....

Another of my favourite artists is Eric Clapton, I'm a real fan of his ability to play anything he puts his mind too. from pure blues to Jazz  rock and everything inbetween. I'm chooseing, probably his best know and signature tune Layla, and Old Love. One being full-on electrical delivery, and the other a good old blues number. I actually prefer the unplugged version, purely for that awsome piano solo!!

David, in case you haven't figured it out yet I listen to everything, except hip hop/ rap and maybe Opera. Depends what mood I'm in. This should give you an idea. The last few bands I saw more recent was Mötley Crüe, ZZ Top with Ted Nugent, and the Vanilla Fudge. Also Billy Joel's band w/o Billy. I listen to anything. When hanging out around here most of the time I either have Classic Rock on or Jazz.
Oh yeah had to throw this thinky in here. My daughter was here a few weeks ago. She looked through the CD's and the only thing she said was she didn't like Marilyn Mason yeah that's right I like some of his songs. Beautiful People I think is a really good song. The video was also really good. They lost out on Best Video to I think Metallica? Right below that CD is Stevie Ray Vaughan and next to him is Meatloaf. So like I said everything.

Vince,

I could give you a list of artists as long as your arm, but i wouldn't be able to say i like every song they ever made. How about posting a track or two, of those that you do like, or that mean something to you. Many of the tracks I've posted here, can take my mind directly back to a time and place, and all the emotions that went with that time and place......

_______________________________________________________________________________________
Posting a couple of tracks by ''Thin Lizzy'', I've seen these live a couple times, and enjoyed the nights and atmosphere they created. Chosen my favorite tracks, but they have plenty more here to offer. To my mind at that time, they were a great band, ....and still a pleasure to listen too!!

Just sounds like a simple straight forward song like a lot of Chinese artist, she just took something simple in English, most of the Chinese artists songs I like are stright forward and simple. The songs she sings in Chinese are as simple, even the rock bands in China I got to listen to were rather grunge simple rock/metal, very easy progressions. Not say a dumbed down as Nirvana, but more along the lines Alice 'n Chains.

But I like the song all the same, it sounds a bit better in Chinese than it does in English.

I will agree she's not Jay Chou (http://www.youtube.com/watch_popup?v=QX1Hicf3myg) that guys completly intense.

Here are a selection of bands that i've seen live over the years. The first three tracks ,when i was still at school. we had a good head of English at our school who put on 2 major plays at the school every year. He finaced them by putting on pop nights with live groups. He had a lot of contacts in the music business, and managed to book upcomming bands, or bands that had just released there first records. Guess we were just pretty lucky this guy was around at that time.....

The Small Faces - Lazy Sunday Afternoon

Ah, rap's fine.  If it makes your head bob or foot tap or feel good, it's all that matters.  Music's music.  I personally don't like much country but it's all good.

I love The Dreaming.  Here's a song they did about my ex wife.   (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gvjT8BRHCqM&feature=related)

Victor,

Yeah, but only had a Scooter for about 6 months....  then i got a car, bikes are just too darn cold and wet for UK winters!! haha!! I was one of the very few students at Uni that was driving about in my own car, needless to say, i done pretty good with the female fraternity of students .... best move i ever made!! Had a bog standard 998cc Anglia (sloping rear window one) 4 years later as i graduated, i bought a brand new Escort 1300E. I think the insurance cost more than the car. ...haha!! Did my Sandwich degree under the sponsorship of Ford's (FOMOCO) so i got a 25% employee discount ...Rock on brother  haha!!

We may have been on different sides of the Mod/Rocker fence, but it seems we had some similar tastes in the music of those days....

Mike,

Yes, ... music has a way of bringing back memories of people places and things. They can bring back real vivid memories of those times too. I often hear a track on the radio, that i haven't heard for years, but my mind can go back to a place and time that i associated with that piece of music as if it were yesterday ....amazing really when you stop and think about it.....  Don't switch off from any music you once liked, it may not bring the same enjoyment it once had, ....but be honest you still like listening to it, ...well it is still a small part of your life!!

I am a romantic at heart :heart: so powerfull ballads are where I am at. I listened big time to Seal's Love Divne when first writing to my wife. Hearing the thunder and rain at the intro of the song and our letters talking about Joy and Sorrow, allowed me to use the analogy of even a flower needing rain in order to grow.

If you want some nice romantic music playing in the background, on those nights where Love is in the air. You cannot make a better choice, than that music being provided by' 'Sade''.  I've chosen just two of the many that i regulary play,  look around for the many more that are available..... Who said you don't like Jazz??

Sade - No Ordinary Love

Not going to show my age but first record I bought was a big black breakable one which played at 78 rpm
I think the cylinders had just gone by then!!!

Seriously - I am into Female Gospel Music. I like it and not just because it is the reason that I can live here in Zhuhai.  There are some damn good singers who sell masses of records but you never hear of them.  'Alabaster Box',  'I Promise' and 'What about the Children'

But without the internet and Gospel Music i would be far away from here drinking my cocoa,tugging on my slippers and wondering if there was going to be any talent,with their own teeth, at the golden oldies lunchtime club the next day.

Instead of that I am having to SUFFER very nice warm weather in really nice accommodation, have to put up with a maid who cannot do enough for me and a young girl friend who seems to think the sun shines out of my ---- and who dotes on me hand and foot.

Its a hard life!!!

Sorry David - I had hunted on youtube for the original released video but could not find it so I did not creat a link to it. http://video.search.yahoo.com/video/play?p=seal+love+divine&ei=UTF-8&fr=yfp-t-150&tnr=21&vid=0001126188079 is a site I found that plays the original video.
This song thou chessy has great emotional meaning for me. It is a powerful ballad. In the early morning of November 1st, 2001 I was driving to my mom's house. The sun was just breaking through the clouds and this song played from my radio http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rn2HIBcirqM

I was going to see my mother because i had recieved the news that my dad had just died.

What songs do I remember as having an influence on my life?

'why' Anthony Newley - my first love ever.

'Running Scared' Roy Orbison - listening to that was the last time I cried openly (now was that last week or the week before!!)

'Poisioning the Pigeons in the Park'  Paddy Roberts - always gave me a good laugh when I hear it - a bit like Kevin 'Bloody' Wilson singing about Christmas.  Hilarious.

And anything at all by Sheila Crosby who over the years has has given me countless personal advice on women which suddenly i am able to put to good use.

This is the official video of the last ''Take That''  song ''Up All Night'' . I'm posting this video, purely for the reason my son's two children were head hunted to appear in this video at a local Shopping Mall ''Lakeside'' in Thurrock, UK. The Video theme is set on a Street Party!! The location for the Video was in Croydon, London.  ''March 2009''

OK,  my grand daughter appears first at around  ''36sec''  dressed in what looks like yellow cardboard tubes with a hole cut out for her face, ...then almost immediately after my grandson dressed as a cardboard robot. My grandson appears again at around ''53sec'' My grand daughter then appears at  around ''2.07sec'' eating an ice lolly (just look at those eyes of hers ...haha!!) They only appear for a couple of seconds between them!!...haha!!!  They were both paid 80 quid (pounds) each. Fed and watered all day, and taxied to and from the venue with Mum...  Oh and the SONG?? Actually, it's not bad, ...not bad at all..... Enjoy!!

I'll never be getting rid of this video, This one is staying with me, ....till i'm under the ground!!! hahaha!!
(It's not available on U Tube something about copyright violation)

You have a treat in store David

Dame Vera Lynn is top of the UK album charts.  I bet you can sing along to all of her songs hahahehe.

I guess you thought she was a little smasher in your day.   92 and top of of the charts.    Something for me to strive towards - fame at 92 .

Willy,

You got a few years on me mate, i'd expect you to be knowing all the words to these songs.
Me, .... just a bit before my time i'm afraid, but i can sing along to most of the Beatles songs.
That any good??  haha!!

David....

PS ....T8 is a pussy storm warning, ....let me know when it's a T10, now that's what you call a storm!! haha!!
         Expect to see some messy streets tomorrow, like blown off shop signs and collapsed Advertisement
         Boards from building roofs, along with other junk that no-body bothered to tie down, and it happens
         every time too. You would think they would know by now that flimsy signs and constructions only last
         for one Typhoon!!..lol,lol!!

Dont expect a link here...it goes for about 1 hour !!!!

I cant imagine any human being writing a better piece of music....also fantastic considering he was deaf at the time

I saw that one live a few years ago in Paris, Barenboim & Berliner Staatskapelle and a fantastic choir, on my stereo (got a nice one, ex sound engineer here) it's nice, in the live version I had tears rolling down my cheeks for the best part of it, the only time this ever happened to me in a concert, although I cried and was depressed for a week when Michael Jackson died :angel: , I saw the thread where some of you are flogging him ... hmmm I know controversial character but his music and singing are from another planet, the greatest innovator since Elvis, James Brown or the Beatles, but then I'm a musician as well so my view is a bit different.

Not sure if Ian Dury was known too well in the States, but he was well known and had big following in UK, Germany, Holland and other parts of Europe. Bit of a controversal character, suffered from the effects of having Polio as a child, so use of one of his legs  and an arm were limited.. I always liked the music of his tracks, and sometimes the words were pretty good too, most being a brief wacky little story ..haha!!    Anyway, i'm posting some of his better known songs, but there are plenty to listen too on UTube if you like ...lol!!

Greetings Brothers,

Just be careful Rob when you go over there if she takes you to KTV (Karaoke).  You are in a private room with your little group so only sing in front of them.  The second last night I was in China Zhen and I went to KTV just the two of us and she had me sing every song in english I could find, then I made the mistake of asking her to play Wo ai ni by SHE in chinese.  I then sang it to her in the KTV room in chinese!!

Well that went over so well I had to do it 3 more times, and also lovers concerto by Kelly Chen 4 times.  I tell you the girl loves my singing even in chinese.

So be careful what you sing to her you may have to do it later in front of a bigger audience at the next KTV you go to.  Also it appears that this is what the older ladies do for fun on a night out so I doubt you will escape it.

Anyway good luck and keep that voice in tune hehe

Regards,

Zhen and Brian

Mr. big butt, Song wasn't bad. Typical in ways but not bad. Drummer? Being an ex-drummer I think he sucked. Half way into the song he started using the bass drum? His cymbal (a crash cymbal) is flat (in tone) for the drum set he has there? he should be a much better drummer. It's all for show.

Post by: Paul Todd on July 31, 2010, 06:27:46 am
I spent the afternoon at my favorite guitar shop and came home with a Fender Telecaster and a 60w amp! Happy days! I like to play blues mostly so I thought I would get in the mood and try and define what the blues is. So here goes:-

1) Most Blues begin, “Woke up this morning…”

2) “I got a good woman” is a bad way to begin the Blues, ‘less you stick something nasty in the next line like, “I got a good woman, with the meanest face in town.”

3) The Blues is simple. After you get the first line right, repeat it. Then find something that rhymes . . . sort of: “Got a good woman with the meanest face in town. Yes, I got a good woman with the meanest face in town. Got teeth like Margaret Thatcher, and she weigh 500 pound.”

4) The Blues is not about choice. You stuck in a ditch, you stuck in a ditch and there ain’t no way out. That's the Blues!

5) Blues cars: Chevys, Fords, Cadillacs and broken-down trucks. Blues don’t travel in Volvos, BMWs, or Sport Utility Vehicles. Most Blues transportation is a Greyhound bus or a southbound train. Jet aircraft an’ state-sponsored motor pools ain’t even in the running. Walkin’ plays a major part in the blues lifestyle. So does fixin’ to die.

6) Teenagers can’t sing the Blues. Adults sing the Blues. In Blues “adulthood” means being old enough to get the electric chair if you shoot a man in Memphis.

7) Blues can take place in New York City but not in Hawaii or any place in Canada (sorry Martin) or France. Hard times in Minneapolis or Seattle is probably just clinical depression. Chicago, St. Louis,and Kansas City  are still the best places to have the Blues. You cannot have the blues in any place that don’t get rain.

8) A man with male pattern baldness ain’t the blues. A woman with male pattern baldness is. Breaking your leg when your skiing is not the blues.. Breaking your leg ’cause a alligator be chomping on it is.

9) You can’t have no Blues in a office or a shopping mall. The lighting is all wrong. Go outside to the parking lot or sit by the dumpster.

10) Good places for the Blues:
a) Highway;
b) Jailhouse;
c) Empty bed;
d) Bottom of a whiskey bottle.

Bad places for the Blues:
a) Starbuck's
b) Gallery openings;
c) Ivy League institutions;
d) Golf courses

11) No one will believe it’s the Blues if you wear a suit, ‘less you happen to be a old ethnic person, and you slept in it.

12) Do you have the right to sing the Blues? Yes, if
a) You older than dirt;
b) You blind;
c) You shot a man in Memphis;
d) You can’t be satisfied.

No, if
a) You have all your teeth;
b) You were once blind but now can see;
c) The man in Memphis lived;
d) You have a private pension or a trust fund.

13) Blues is not a matter of color. It’s a matter of bad luck. Tiger Woods cannot sing the blues. Sonny Liston could. Ugly white people also got a leg up on the blues.

14) If you ask for water and your darlin’ give you gasoline, it’s the Blues. Other acceptable Blues beverages are

a) Cheap wine;
b) Whiskey or bourbon;
c) Muddy water;
d) Nasty black coffee.

The following are NOT Blues beverages:
a) Perrier;
b) Chardonnay;
c) Snapple;
d) Slim Fast.

15) If death occurs in a cheap motel or a shotgun shack, it’s a Blues death. Stabbed in the back by a jealous lover is another Blues way to die. So is the electric chair, substance abuse and dying lonely on a broken down cot. You can’t have a Blues death if you die during a tennis match or getting liposuction.

16) Some Blues names for women:
a) Sadie;
b) Big Mama;
c) Bessie;
d) Fat River Dumpling

17) Some Blues names for men
a) Joe;
b) Willie;
c) Little Willie;
d) Big Willie

18) Persons with names like Michelle, Amber, Debbie, and Heather can’t sing the Blues no matter how many men they shoot in Memphis.

19) Make your own Blues name Starter Kit:

a) Name of physical infirmity (Blind, Cripple, Lame, etc.);
b) First name (see above) plus name of fruit (Lemon, Lime, Kiwi, etc.);
c) Last name of a US President (Jefferson, Johnson, Fillmore, etc.);
d) For example, Blind Lime Jefferson, Jakeleg Lemon Johnson or Cripple Kiwi Fillmore, etc. (Well, maybe not “Kiwi.”)

20) I don’t care how tragic your life, if you own a computer, you cannot sing the blues,but you can still fake it! ha-ha

That's done it now where my guitar!............................................I think I feel the "Yellow River Delta Blues comin' on......

Yeah I'm old enough.

or if your Glen Campbell or John Denver.   I'm leaving on a jet plane, I don't know when I'll be back again.

Not quite the same.

One more thing.  You can't play the blues if your can't play a 7 chord.  :P
