I need to know if any music from outside china is allowable. If so what types. My lady says she listens to coutry music.I was also wondering if this ment country and western or music from their country(chinese folk music).I think since China Shark Mike lives there he may be able to answer this.I was wanting to send my lady some cds but wasnt sure what was permisable
-
Sorry to bust in but this one has been on my mind all day. Do you think the Chinese know about Elvis? Would many of the recognize his music?
-
The lady I talk to likes Faye Wong
I think whether or not they like western music is going to depend on their eglish ability
Otherwise they would most likely listen to Chinese music, from pop to rock but in of course Mandarin or Cantonese
-
How about some of the other pop stars such as Madonna, Gwen Stefani, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, have they heard of them? (I got this list from one of my daughters that is a huge Elvis fan) I was listening to Alan Jackson one evening when the lady I went to Singapore to meet popped into my hotel room and she asked who I was listening to. She had never heard of him.

Well if she likes country music Arnold then I hate to say it but she might like Willy.
-
Just wanted you all to know , I'm going by my experience here . Qing's Brother , Cousin both play English Music in their Car ( cd's ) . In Park's Visited one hears English Music coming from Boomboxes from young People . Older People Dance to Walz's and Polka Music . Our Translator in GuangZhou listens to English Music . In Beijing , our Guide even played English Cd's for us . So for sure City Folks are familiar with western Music . On the Countryside , that's another thing of course .. I assume .

I asked Peggy if she had heard of Elvis. When I spoke his name she said yes. When I typed it she asked me what Elvis was so I translated the name into Chinese and she said yes she knew quite a bit about him. Sent her a couple of pictures and she recognized them.
We didn't get into any other musicians.

Well if she likes country music Arnold then I hate to say it but she might like Willy.
I thought I was going to read "She might be a Redneck?" :icon_biggrin:
I have heard (or read) of Elvis impersonators, so they must know of him, maybe the older generation?
-
Dont know about Elvis but there are a great number of youngsters going around with one glove on their hand - Michael Jackson style. Did he always wear that one glove so as not to leave DNA?
Country music - did I miss out on a whole batch of women when I was single? Now I know what one meant last year when she said that she was going down to the 'Ol Oprey'. I thought I was in for something special - But no such luck. She went out for a session of line dancing -Chinese style.
Willy
I have studied singing with my neighbour and I can now do a good rendition of 'Gleen Gleen Glass of Hume" and a cool version of 'Clying"
-
Elvis was popular when the great wall was closed i have heard more
i dont know him but seems evryone knows micheal jackson
the glove was just oe of his strange and odd behaviors but i think
his most stupid one was the veil out of all the strange things he did

Greetings Brothers,
As far as the liking western music goes I hear it all the time here in wuhu. All the clothing stores for younger people have speakers outside blaring rap crap punk and junk all the time, drives me nuts.
The ladies i work with all have english songs as their ring tones on the phones , but of course they all speak english, all the students like english music. I have asked students what music they like and many say R&B jazz, rock, hip hop, country, etc. So all kinds of western music is popular in Wuhu, I even have students young ones that like western classical music.
As for Zhen she likes rock country and even scottish folk music. You brits may have heard of The Corries from Scotland, she likes them too. She doesnt understand the words but she likes the music.
Regards,
Zhen and Brian

You will find that the youngsters will be listening/playing the English/western music while the older generations will still favour listening to Chinese fare, whether modern or traditional. The English/western type stuff got more and more popular during the time i was living over there...
There tastes seem to follow whatever is currently being played in the west or what is recent in China!! ...there not far behind the times these days ...lol!!!
As for the western artists they know about, the more famous they are in the west, the more chance of the Chinese knowing about them!!
The same goes for the styles of music, ...the artists will promote the styles they are part of.
Thank god not too many of the Chinese listen to ''Country''!! Can't stand the stuff myself, always seems there singing about ''somebody's killed me dog'' or ''some-one's run off with me girl/wife'' ...Bloody cut your throat type music!! Even worse is this ''Rap'' ....now what a crock of crap that is, ....and mostly sung (if you can call it singing) by street thugs/crooks and dope pushers!!

Hey guys. This thread made me remember a collection of Chines songs I put together a long time ago. Most of the music is 5-10 years old but my wife still enjoys them.
http://www.niwot.net/mp3/chinese-mp3/ (http://www.niwot.net/mp3/chinese-mp3/)
I need to ask a favor. Since I made this post the bandwidth of my web account has really gone up. I have had to upgrade a few times. Feel free to browse and play and grab the songs you are interested in. But please don't download the whole directory so you have your own copy. It blows my bandwidth limit and they shut down my account for a couple days. This directory has been there for years and will be there for years to come. OK?
-
slow loading but some good music here i think
-
The modern Chinese stuff is quite good, but God that traditional singing is something else to listen too!!! A cat's choir comes speedily to mind!! ...lol!!! Bloody awful is an understatement!!
And how any Westerner can sit through a traditional Chinese Play, is just totally beyond me!! It comes under my Tried it Once, ....Never Ever again experiences!!! ...haha!!!

This morning Peggy and her granddaughter were dancing an playing to an America rap CD that was absolutely horrid. It was also stuff I had never heard before, not that I listen to rap. I detest it but I hear it all of the time. I smiled and danced with them a little just to see the granddaughter laugh and smile. I'll have to talk with Peggy about the CD. Some of the language was quite questionable. Of course I am sure she does not have a clue.
Notice that there is one word completely missing from this post in reference to what we are talking about. I do not used it in relation to rapping. It just isn't what it is called.
-
Shaun,
Your lucky you could understand anything mate!! just call this stuff, ...Unadulterated Crap!!
Originally devised for misfits and the very easily pleased, by the scum of this world, that can't speak in any coherent language....

-
David,
All I could really understand were the F and S words. That was how I could identify. Oooo..... did I really say that?
-
David,
Yes I listen to country music. I also listen to hip hop, rock, clasical,... pretty well anything that is good. There is a lot of good country music too. I too do not like rap, but only for the lyrics with reguards to their treatment of women. It is breeding a generation of people that will treat their women horribly. Some of the music is ok, they just need to get new lyrics for it! Speaking of all this, has anybody noticed the showing of underwear by the chinese youth? I have not noticed anybody commenting on it and I have not paid enough attention to it in any photographs. I'll have to put up an email I just got on "Dads' rules for dating my daughter" in just for a laugh. There is a rule that deals with this. I thought it was pretty good.

PS.
Speaking of songs about "killing my dog", check out the newspaper here for todays front page, may 12. windsorstar.com It will make you sick!

Dave C,
I like most music myself, but can't stand that country stuff, Rap, and opera singing.... But Rap is my real bugbear, unadulterated CRAP!!!
As for showing underwear, they have been doing that for years in Japan, seen some of that in HK too and that was a time back also... haha!!!
I don't have that worry of daughters dating these days ...already married..lol!!! ...But i do remember the joke, and yes it was funny...lol!!!

lately i have been hearing rap on the loudspeakers outside Chante Coffee shop and the lyrics
are well pretty BAD dont they know what they have downloaded????
-
I would guess that they don't understand the words Ted? And they have so many made up words too that would not translate to chinese, so they may not understand what is in the lyrics! ( "for shizzle", means "for sh*t",... etc.) I heard a new one the other day in a song my daughters were listening to. A girl was singing a song about meeting a boy and "he blew up my bones" was in the line. I still don't know the meaning of this yet, but I may have an idea. It was a hip hop song though, not rap. I try to keep up with the sayings my daughters may use from time to time. :icon_cheesygrin:

My lady and I send music in our emails all the time, apparently she's downloading it frequently. Most of them are ballads. It's funny, she's sending me love songs in English. I listen to the romantic lyrics and wonder if she understands it? Usually she doesn't, so she has no idea how cute songs she's sending!
I haven't sent her any Iron Maiden or Nightwish tracks yet, nor any hardcore trance tracks, think I'll save those for later... I've sent her some Swedish music, though. Which she enjoyed. Chinese music practically = ballads. Some of them are quite good, but a lot of them are not. And the Chinese rap is... hrm... 不好听! It's great the Chinese enjoy laowai music as well, though.
-
Sorry guys, But I am shutting down my database of Chinese mp3s. The word got out and I have maxed out my bandwidth limit each month since I originally posted the URL. I have already transferred 66 gig this month and it is only the 10th. Nearly all the requests are coming from Asia. I wish I could leave it up but I cant afford to keep upgrading every month.

My wife seems to like Reggae and POP, Old Michael Jackson stuff like that.
I showed her a few old videos I found like from Thriller and before. She did not know Michael Jackson was Black.
She actually called her sister and a few friends to tell them this. Her sister came right over to see it did not believe it.
Some of the things these people are led to believe about the US is unbelievable to me.
A good friend told me his wife actually ask him if the streets are really paved with gold.
For any new guys expect this kind of stuff, It's like when I was 15 I heard rumor that the age for a drivers license was going to be lowered to 15. And all of my Children over the years hear the same rumor about the time they turn 15.
And unfortunately just like the kids. Some things they want to believe so badly. They will not change their mind until they see it themselves.
My wife still having a hard time believing all Americans are not rich. Example: I used the money I did not have to pay a month rent with in the US. To pay an additional 6 months rent here. I am pretty lucky she is the most saving woman I have ever met. I finally found a bottle of yellow Mustard at the store for my hamburgers, like 10 rmb. She tried very hard to talk me out of buying it.
If we are not completely out of something we don't need more yet. But if I ask her for something I want, with in a minute or 2 I hear the front door close she has gone after it.
She has fallen in love with Spam and eggs with hash browns and toast for breakfast. We never run out.
Like pulling teeth getting the first round, but if she likes it I will always have it.
These girls have a lot of different ways, and sometimes a bit tough. But in the end it is always the best I could ever hope for.
-
i think we all forgot micheal jackson was black
my wife likes the breakfast to - bacon eggs and toast or flapjacks and bacon all with homefried potatoes
so we never run out of bisquick, bacon, maple syrup at the house

Well back to Music . I don't know if I even mentioned that Qing listens actually more to Japanese Songs ( Artist's ) than chinese . Even when we're were at a KTV .. she sang mostly in Japanese .. which I find more soothing/sexier to the ear . So of course I developed likeing for both .This is something she does miss here in the States . As a result , I will ask our Major of Palmdale ( who operates the Parks
Stage ) that is used for the Summer Concert's .. if possible to use " IT " for Kareoke weekend's . Where say .. 20 or so People make advanced reservations to sing in front a local crowd . Qing would love to get up there , me .. it would take quite some Drinks before that happens .
-
Arnold,
It would take us quite a few drinks before you got u... :o I mean before I got up there too. ;)

I am at a loss on this one....on my ladies Qzone site she has.....are ya ready, Taylor Swift (American Country Singer) playing in the background.
So, to be honest I have not a clue what her style is, since she has sent me all sorts of tunes from almost depressing Chinese piano love songs to Japanese POP and now....Country music...Of course the song from Taylor Swift is her latest hit called "Smile" and I have to admit I do like it, even though I am not a fan of country. The even funnier part is that its all in English, so I wonder if she knows the translation?
-
Growing up in Germany , all we listened to was English R&R and MoTown back in the 60's . Now I listen to Chinese Music a lot and I mean a lot . I don't know what they singing about , I just love their Tunes ( their Instrument's from long ago ) . Of course when my Wife sings , it's heavenn no matter what I hear or what language .
