One of my most favorite actors ever! I rate him right up there with Wayne, Fonda and Stewart. (i love westerns)

Linda and Ziwei are now hooked on Gunsmoke and we watch it as often as we can. He will be sadly missed!

Dang Maxx, ye ain't old enough to remember those actors.  Hehe.  How about Gabby Hayes.

My fathers favorite show ever was Gunsmoke and he had most all of it on CD.  Guess who inheritied that collection.  You know there was a series before Gunsmoke called The Marshall or Matt Dillon or Marshall Dillon or something like that.  I think it was 3 seasons long and had the same host of characters.

It is one of my favorite shows and like my father I love westerns too.

You cannot go mentioning Gabby Hayes without naming his mentor Hopalong Cassidy.

Roy Rogers was popularin the UK. Now what was the name of the creature he used to ride? ...... Got it! Dale Evans.

Also remember Kit Carson, Lash Larue,

Not forgetting the Cisco Kid and Pancho and the Range Rider. Forget his name but he always punched downwards.

'Have Gun Will Travel' was huge in UK along with Wagon Train with Ward Bond and Robert Horton. And who could forget Rawhide that brought forth Rowdy Yates alias Clint Eastwood.

The ones I want to forget is Bonanza and most of the follow up for one of the actors, Michael langdon, Little House On the Praire.

Stirring meories or what.

Shaun yeah I'm old enough to remember them barely.I was like 3 or 4 when Hannibel Hays and Kid Curry were on.And the show was called Alis smith and Jones I think. And I'm old enough to remember  Wild Wild west with Robert Conrad.

I know who Gabby hays was and hopalong Cassidy was.I never watched any of there movies. But I have seen a few Daniel Boone shows. When they were in reruns.

Willy Trigger was the name of Roy Rogers horse. The horse is on Display at the Roy Rogers Museum.Dale Evans never carried Roy Rogers. They were as pure as the driven snow.

So you say Max.  But did you ever notice the size of the smile on Roy's Face!  I never known him pull a Trigger but I bet he pulled a certain lady 8).

Randolph Scott of High Noon Fame - reputed to be the 'Biggest Star' in Hollywood - and I don't mean his studio ranking ;D ;D ;D

Willy

Have Gun Will Travel was Richard Boone.

Here are a few more that come to mind.   Marvick, F-Troupe, Best of the West (my favorite character is Frog), Audie Murphy

Willy to suggest that Roy Rogers and Dale Evans were anything less than pure driven snow is almost sacreligious and unAmerica.  But if people will remember Dale was Roy's second wife and it was quite controversial.  They took a lot of heat for it back in the day.  I don't remember what the issues were I would have to ask my mother.

Well you know me Shaun, unAmerican to the core. I still remember not being invited to the Boston Tea Party!  Third wife I think but wonder just how many fillies RR rode before the end of his days.  No wonder Trigger got stuffed as well.

UnAmerican Willy?, don't tell me you are still upset for the missed Tea Party, Well it was Alice's fault as she fell down some rabbit hole and mistakenly gave it to the Mad Hatter.

Anyways the American people tried to make up for that faux pas by having a special day set aside to commemorate both your Birthday and your condition ( The real reason Alice could not find you 8) )

Man Willy your older then I thought?

I don't think anyone gave mention to this Cowboy? I'm happy to say was before my time ( :-\  somewhat) Gene Autry, America's Favorite Singing Cowboy. Although his signature song was "Back in the Saddle Again" I never related this song to riding a horse.  :o

Sorry for the early Birthday Card Willy, as I was planning to use that Tongue-in-cheek on July 4th, but you gave me the perfect set up.  ::)

Anyways I originally put up this thread because I noticed the news about James Arness riding off into the sunset. I see many fans here grew up watching cowboy movies and I bet also reading western books. I would say that my favorite Actor growing up was John Wayne, and I tell people the reason that I joined the Army was too many John Wayne Movies.

Growing up watching Westerns.... but travelling Eastern for romance!
It's a MAd MAd World  :o

Gee Willy, what must one country do to get back into your good graces.  I mean all over America we celebrate your birthday, we break out the flags, we drink plenty of beer, and shoot fireworks in your honor.  What more can we do?

Wow, I didn't realize 3 wives.  Maybe that is what had so many people up in arms.

Well I thnk I could change for ten cents only.

That is ten cents from every man, woman and child in the USA.

Do you want to start the collection?

I'll put my 2 cents worth in. Most of the people you expect to donate don't have two nickels to rub together. So don't count on it.

Willy...  I like you...    Your a nice guy...   But collecting money from every American?   Gee...  You might be asking too much.

But Vince has it right.   After they go to Starbucks they don't have 2 nickels to rub together for a donation.

When they said Go West Young Man they meant go to the East.

I seem to remember a line in either "The Man from Snowy River" or "Quiqley down under", believe it was snowy river, "They told me go west young man, and I did, all the way to the east!"

I grew up on John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, Roy Rogers and Gene Autrey. Dad has a collection of westerns that abnormally disgusting, I haven't heard any titles that are not in there. His new goal is all 172 films that John Wayne appeared in. My collection is Eastwood westerns.  However I have, between my dad and my grandfathers, been subjected to watching anything "western" for tv series and movies my entire life. Some good, some total cheese work, but I always seemed to like those spaghetti westerns.

My grandfather (mom's side) would be upset over the disapproval of Bonanza and little house, but he is a devout Baptist man and approved very much of the roles played by Mr. Langdon, who was a devout bible thumper as well, I do not recall the particular brand, but a devout man he was.

As a kid I remember watching his show on TV.

The show "Gunsmoke" was very popular in Norway. It aired prime time on the only (!) tv channel we had back then, so no wonder it was a hit. It also helped that Arness family was of Norwegian origin :)

Another very popular character from Gunsmoke was Festus, for some reason that strange character was very popular. I think he was the most popular character, in Norway,  from the show  ::)

Festus was a popular character.  He came to my hometown quite often with the Rodeo.  He did a little stand up comedy.  He was a pretty funny guy as I remember.

Robbie Audia Murphy was  a WW 2 hero.He tried to sign up for the Marines,Army,And Navy. They all turned him down because he was to short. He went back to the Army recruiter a second time. And they let him sign up.He was the most decorated veteran of WW2 .After the war.He was so famous in the U.S. that he started making movies. If I remember correctly. He was killed in 1976.By a drunk driver.

During twenty-seven months in action in the European Theatre he received the Medal of Honor, the U.S. military's highest award for valor, along with 32 additional U.S. and foreign awards (medals, ribbons, citations, badges...) including five awards from France and one from Belgium
Murphy's successful movie career included To Hell and Back (1955), based on his book of the same title (1949). He died in a plane crash in 1971, at age 46, and was interred, with full military honors, in Arlington National Cemetery.

I remember watching his movies and I read his book while growing up. Maxx I think it was Patton that you got mixed up with as he was involved in a car accident that led to his death. Another favorite of mine T.E. Lawrence also meet his demise in a motorcycle accident.

Robbie sorry.Rhonald is right.Yes Patton was killed in a car wreck. After his death. There were some people thinking that maybe Patton was assassinated. For his political views. He wanted to keep marching. And take the Soviets out of the picture.I think that is a whole different topic.

My dad was a big John Wayne fan I think he seen everyone of John Wayne's movie. He was also a fan of Louie L'Amour.A famous western writer. My dad did have everyone of his books. And he read all of them at least a half dozen times.I like Clint Eastwood movies better. The Westerns and the dirty Harry movies.I think my favorite Clint eastwood movie is the Outlaw Josey Wales.
Title: Re: How many watched his heroics?
Post by: Rhonald on October 02, 2012, 12:16:44 am
I love Outlaw Josey Wales (not my favorite but up there) partly because of Chief Dan George ( a real Canadian Chief) words of wisdom and also Josey's tactics. I think right now my favorite of Clint's is Gran Torino. Loved John Wayne movies (got me to join the Army I tell people) and dreamed of entering a story contest to win a chance to meet him but English was frustrating for me at that time.

Back when I was a youngster (wee lad for those across the pond) I think I enjoyed the WWII movie The Devil's Brigade best as it stereotyped the American soldiers compared to the Canadians.

I am building my collection of DVD Westerns.  I already have the first 5 seasons of Gunsmoke.   I'm collecting John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, Robert Duvall, Tom Selleck just to name a few.

I'm also collecting some older war movies.  Just purchased and watched A Bridge Too Far.  I didn't realize what a big cluster fudge that was.

I'm also a Western Freak. My favourite Clint movie got to be "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" and all the other Spaghetti movies with Lee van Cleef.
My John Wayne favourite is "El Dorado" with Robert Mitchum and James Caan.
Nobody mentioned "Bonanza", I liked that even better than "Gunsmoke" & "El Chaparral". Just can't beat those Classic's!

I have to say, there is a TV station here that plays all the old western shows and movies including many old TV shows. Gunsmoke, Bonanza are on everyday. I was watching some cowboy movie from long ago and it had me laughing so hard tears were running from my eyes. It seems the indian (Native amer) medicine man was into Voodoo?? Cursed the cowboy with a shrunken head as well?? I mean WTF? Such BS we were lead to believe.

Willy two things you can say about the British Army.  They aren't exactly the best at war but they sure look good doing it.  I just watched War Horse.  Great movie.

Arnold, I am watching The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly right now.  It takes me about 3 nights to watch a movie and I started it last night.

Bonanza is another collection I have began.  My favorite John Wayne is McClintock followed by  El Dorado, Rio Lobo, Cowboys.  I also like The Comancheros which reminds me of Lee Marvin whom I like.

Anybody ever seen the Movie the bridge on the river Kwai.I seen it a couple of times. But I was real young. In 2005 I was in Thailand.I went on a  tour of the bridge.I walked threw the cemetery.I walked over the bridge.Took a short boat ride down the Kwai river. Then I took a train ride on the original tracks that  the P.O.W. laied.Up to the trainstation at Hells gate.It was a real history lesson.Probably the best Twenty bucks I ever spent. They had a little Museum there at the bridge. And when I rode the train you could still see parts of the huts.Along the train tracks. that the P.O.W. used.

John Wayne made a couple of movies outside Canon City Colorado. In the old west town of Buckskin Joe's.One of the movies was called the Cowboys.I don't remember what the other movie was called. They made allot of westerns at Buckskin Joe's.All of the Sackett movies,Cat balue. They even made silent pictures there With tom Mix.

About 4 years ago somebody from Cal. bought the town. And tore it down.I don't know what they did with the buildings.I can remember going up to Buckskin Joe's on the weekends.Watching the gunfights.Hanging out in the saloon. And drinking real cheap beer. The best part was setting in the saloon drinking beer. While they were making a movie out in the street. The last movie I know of that they made there was Lightning Jack.staring Paul Hogan.

Arnold I could never get into watching Bonanza.Everytime I started watching it.Somebody would set the map on fire. And I couldn't find my way. ;D

I also walked the bridge on the river kwai.  I know its the real deal but I had this image in my head from seeing the movie a half dozen times. It took me by surprise.   I was really surprised when I first saw it. It looks nothing like the bridge the British built.

Gerry from what I was told.By the tour guide. The movie was made in the Phillipines. So that wasn't the real bridge in the movie. My tour guide also said that. The movie didn't even come close to showing how brutal the Japanese guards were.Or how bad the working conditions were.

I read a article on the enternet a few years ago. That was written by a American.Who was a P.O.W.That worked  on the bridge and the railroad. He trashed the movie. And the actor who played the British officer. In the movie the British officer was a turncoat who helped and in couraged the Japanese. In real life the British officer was a stand up guy.Who messed with the Japanese army any chance he got.The article went on to say how the British officer helped the other P.O.W.s

What really  surprised me about the tour was the cemetery that we went to.and how many P.O.W died building the bridge and the train tracks. My tour guide said that we were at the biggest cemetery. He also said that there was other cemetery's along the train tracks. That were about half the size of the one we were at.
