Hi Everyone,
I would like to ask anyone who have experienced a good and reasonable travel agency in China and/or in the US. My fiancee who lives in Changsha and I want to go for a trip when I go to see her next month. Can you recommend a travel company that you really liked, reasonably priced and came through with all their promises without a hitch? She wanted to go to  these places:    xiang ge li la  ,          li jiang,           lu gou hu,     mei li heng he  and  yun nan li jiang.  She said that she can make the arrangements to go there but if there is a good tour that we can take that is a good price, then I might go through a tour company so we don't have to worry about anything and we can relax and just enjoy ourselves. Any other places that you went to, that you would say that we must see? Of course we know about Guilin already.

She wanted to see mountains and rivers, she said. I was thinking about taking her to   Jiuzhaigou .  I've been there myself and it is beautiful. She has not gone there so we may plan to go there too. I am looking for a tour to there.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Wilfred

They offer tour packages and very reasonable prices. I was very pleased with the vacation package we got from themn (Thailand). Be prepared to sit through a couple of marketing presentations during your vacation. That is part of their business plan an is one of the reasons they can offer such good discounts.

Here is a place where you can book tours or roll your own. http://activities.english.ctrip.com/Activities/pkgsearch.aspx

We used CYTS, China Youth Travel Service, or something like that. And even if it states, YOUTH... Most of the people there were from other agencies and older people. But they were trustworthy. And they are quite big company, have many offices around the country.
She searched the Internet first, to find out about different prices. CYTS was about 100rmb more expensive than the internet ones. But they have a big local office, and are well known/trustworthy, so we decided to pay the 100rmb more for security (except the buss driver was a madman haha ;D)

We paid 2500 yuan for 2 people for a 5 day trip to Jiuzhaigou and Huanlong, hotel, food, transports, tickets etc. included. No one spoke English from that travel group... Except my girl, but we used another language more than English anyway.
And once we reached the destination, the group leader let us roam around freely and go where we wanted in the place. So we could spend time together just the two of us, and walk slowly/fast however we felt like. And not wait for other people, or others waiting for us... Instead of following some person with a microphone yelling, or holding a flag... She told us a time when the buss leaves back to hotel (when to return to the gates). And everything worked fine.

I was really satisfied. And might use them in the future as well, depending how things work out.

Oh and about Lijiang. I was there also, lived in the old town 70rmb/night a quiet room for two. And the inn owner always would arrange us on small local tours, mini buss, 4-7 people in the buss. And take us somewhere, to see all kinds of pretty things. And we would pay a ridiculous small price for the tips/travel fee. She even got us front row seats from Lijiang local Naxi music show. So if you find a good inn. The owner will help you a lot.

when you are in LiJiang,Yunnan you can head on towards Tiger Leaping Gorge and to Shangri La. Shangri La give you a small taste of Tibet and you can also take a cable cart to a mountain top 4500 meter above sea level. Beatiful scenary all the way from LiJian to Shangri La, also very changing from "low land" to high mountain and along the road there is rivers all the time.Another place to go from LiJiang would be Lugu Lake, it's a very scenary place.

I would recommend to travel by yourself, by bus tickets from place to place, you can always by short trips to particular places that you find during your travel.

Fiona and I are in Beihai now and are doing some touring and sightseeing. We managed the first three days on our own but the taxi and rickshaw drivers are all cousins and are programmed to steer you to their friends, bars, restruants, discos and other activities.  Today we decided to try a travel booking agent and it turned out great. We booked a trip to the city aquarium and the beach and the owner of the agency closed the shop and drove us there. Tickets and transportation for 2 people 230 RMB.  We are going back tomorrow to book some other activities. She has a list of things to do in and around Beihai and you can book them a la cart.
