Chinese see the world differently

Chinese and American people see the world differently - literally. While Americans focus on the central objects of photographs, Chinese individuals pay more attention to the image as a whole, according to psychologists at the University of Michigan.

"There is plenty of anecdotal evidence suggesting that Western and Chinese people have contrasting world-views," explains Richard Nisbett, who carried out the study. "Americans break things down analytically, focusing on putting objects into categories and working out what rules they should obey," he says.

By contrast,Chinese have a more holistic philosophy, looking at objects in relation to the whole. "Figuratively, Americans see things in black and white, while Chinese see more shades of grey," says Nisbett. "We wanted to devise an experiment to see if that translated to a literal difference in what they actually see."

The researchers tracked the eye-movements of two groups of students while they looked at photographs. One group contained American-born graduates of European descent and the other was comprised of Chinese-born graduate students who came to the US after their undergraduate degrees.

Each picture showed a striking central image placed in a realistic background, such as a tiger in a jungle. They found that the American students spent longer looking at the central object, while the Chinese students' eyes tended to dart around, taking in the context.
Harmony versus goals

Nisbett and his colleagues believe that this distinctive pattern has developed because of the philosophies of these two cultures. "Harmony is a central idea in Chinese philosophy, and so there is more emphasis on how things relate to the whole," says Nisbett. "In the West, by contrast, life is about achieving goals."

Psychologists watching American and Chinese families playing with toys have also noted this difference. "An American mother will say: ?Look Billy, a truck. It's shiny and has wheels.' The focus is on the object," explains Nisbett. By contrast, Chinese mothers stress context saying things like, "I push the truck to you and you push it to me. When you throw it at the wall, the wall says ?ouch'."

Nisbett also cites language development in the cultures. "To Westerners it seems obvious that babies learn nouns more easily. But while this is the case in the West, studies show that Chinese children pick up verbs - which relate objects to each other - more easily.

"Nisbett's work is interesting and suggestive," says John Findlay, a psychologist specialising in human visual attention at Durham University, UK. "It's always difficult to put an objective measure on cultural differences, but this group have made a step towards that."

Nisbett hopes that his work will change the way the cultures view each other. "Understanding that there is a real difference in the way people think should form the basis of respect."

Interestingly enough they do this in American movies as well. Whenever they cut to a new scene where there is a crowd or a field always look center of the screen then you'll see what they want you to see. In the movie "Tootsie" when he's in the crowd walking in woman's clothes is a good example.

I also read a report that Western people seems to first look in someones eyes and then on their mouth. Asian people seems to look at the nose all the time...
Better to be married to a wife from Changsha then have 7000 women in Chnlove

Point being is that the differences are what make the relationships work. Never a time when you will ever not have something to talk about with one another. Forever exchanging cultural nuances. I've been fascinated with Asian cultures probably at least 25 years, actively pursuing them for about 17 or 18 years. Just something inside that finds the Asian female so intriguing. Hell, even the not so pretty ones appear attractive to me. Both parties are intrigued by the differences in facial features as well as body types. Most Asians perceive all differences as beautiful here. Because we are different all foreigners seem to fall into the category of beautiful or handsome. Let me tell you that there are a lot of sad foreigners here that are not even close to being either of those adjectives. Mike, if you look someone in the eyes where are you looking? Western culture is about directness and getting straight to the point, eastern culture is about everything in the group first. Our culture is very egotistical yet thier's is about serving the group first. The dynamics are diametrically opposed to our way of thinking. If we thought the same I would imagine they wouldn't appear as attractive to us and visa versa. Some of us are born to conform while others must follow the path less traveled in life. Many of us dilluded ourselves initially by marrying a western women and trying to make a go at it. Our culture does not embrace the man with a sensitive very much, western perception of a man is much like the Chinese man's view of what makes a man. Selfish, adulterous, drinking, smoking, gambling are all traits the majority of the men on here do not have therefore much more attractive to the Chinese woman's sensibilities. In a sense both male and females here are outcasts because we are the chosen ones to say I want to be happy regardless of how difficult the path will be. There is something to be said for perseverence. Never say die or give up. Unfortunately sometimes this path is too ardous for some so they give up because of mistrust. That being said I am a confirmed eggman with yellow fever seeking my Chinese doll whereever she may be.

I dont dont play dead or roll like some here do. Plus if you saw my employment i talk to scamming people everyday.. and iwhen they cuss me or insult me i can not fight back or loose my cool. Shane I think you are burning a bridge you don't need too...

It seemed to me that there were a few people here who actually cared about you...  just my 2 cents for what it's worth.

Shane

Having read through the posts I have to agree with David, many have shown a great deal of empathy towards you and your problem, things can only get better, no need to give up and go.
