How about......

F1

In NASCAR the Michigan race is this weekend. Tony Stewart said he was going to liven things up for the next few races.

In Hockey game 6 of the finals was tonight. I did not watch it. (No tv and didn't want to go to a sports bar to watch it) Anybody see the game?  :o  Just got the text, Chicago won the cup!

Now, the world cup... thats soccer right?,... no football right?...  :o ??? :o

I wasn't going to mention the World Cup... :-X :( :(

However seeing as sport has been mentioned, I would like to offer Eng+*&^ all the best on their holidays.

Our neighbours down South deserve to have our backing...Come on Engl*&^.....I for one want to see them get to at least the Semi-Finals...Then THOROUGHLY enjoy seeing them getting cuffed in the PENALTY shootout .....AGAIN...

HAHA.... ;D ;D ;D

Critic's give England a fair chance to make it to the last four . Of course Brazil is the one everybody talks about . I myself think , Brazil will not get further then the Semi's this time . They showed weakness last time and looks they did not improof much this time around .
I of course like Germany , but for them to reach the semi's is a accomplishment ( new team and the youngest in many years ) .
My money would be on Argentina .
As for the Nascar race , I'm a full-blooded Jeff Gorden Fan . yeah 24 !

Ice Hockey , I am sooo glad Chicago won ... I hate the Flyer's with a passion , ever since Dave Brown put that hit on Tomas Sandstrom way back in the 80's . Almost killed the Guy with his stick in the Face .

Basketball , I don't give a Hoot . Go Boston !!

Dave C ... that's pretty cool how you did the "F1" racing across the screen.

I have missed all Stanley Cup games here in China, just watching the replays on Internet sports channels.

As for the World Cup, it'll be shown on CCTV 9 everyday.

I hope Holland wins as they haven't won before. Realistically, I think Brazil, Argentina or Spain will win ... not that I follow soccer at all. I think it's a boring sport but I know that lots of strategy & stamina are involved in the game.

Last week, China's women's table tennis team lost in the finals against Singapore. The # 1 rank player in the world, Liu S W lost twice. The men's team won against Germany but their # 1 guy, Ma Lin lost a match against Timo Bell of Germany whose's the # 3 player in the world.

Other countries are catching up in table tennis against China the same way that other countries caught up to Canada in hockey.

World Cup, I will watch a few match ups.  Of course I am interested if the U.S. will come out and play as if they want to be there.

NBA Playoffs are going on now.  My beloved Celtics are down 2-1 to the Lakers.  The last game would have been one if Ray Allen would have just made two buckets.  A day after he broke a playoff record 8 threes in a game.  Go Celtics.

MLB- Well the Kansas City Royals suck and our Cy Young award winning pitcher lossed his brains.  Hello last place again.

NFL- Chiefs have a Monday night football game, and the opening of the new Arrowhead

What I am excited about this weekend though is the Scottish Highland games and bagpipe competition.  Nothing I like more than listen to bagpipes.

Come on guys, everyone knows that Australia has more world champions in any sport than any other country.

I would like to see the Aussies give it to the Germans in their opening world cup game.....then onto Italy in the finals and get one back for the biggest swan dive in all of world cup history that cost Australia the game.  Well then Italy did go on to win the world cup, just what could have been....just another trophy in the all ready too full cabinet......

Using kangaroos and koalas as shields against the rebuttal.......

I watched that game Jason , they got robbed for sure . I would not have been proud winning like this . If the Aussie's can get a couple early , Germany will fall apart with too many young inexperienced player's .

I think Scotland will win the World Cup - not this world cup, or the next, or the next or the next but maybe the next - but am I talking out of my bagpipes?

Well Rob - miracles do happen!!!!

And no talk of SOCCER!

We the purist call it football.
Not that Nancy game where they stop every two minutes and get the team to cuddle on the pitch.

The World Cup will be World wide and is the result of matches played by every national team in the World.   (Unlike the World Series of Baseball - Now how many countries compete in that?)

My favourite Indi car driver - Dario Francitti -  From Scotland of course.  A minor part of the UK.

Well to start off, congratulations to the Chicago Black Hawks for winning the Stanley Cup! You Toronto Maple Leaf fans can take heart now, it can be done! Hahaha.  ;D I am a Detroit Red Wing Fan myself.

Chong,
You gotta play with the buttons above the box for writing your posts. Click on the moving "M" with the arrow button. It makes the text or smiles or whatever you put between the bracketed move march across the post.

I am a Jimmy Johnson fan myself Arnold. Jeff is half owner of that team so I guess that makes me a Gordon fan too. I used to race a stock car here at the local track back in the 1970's. That was a lot of fun! No, I never won a race. Only raced 11 races but had a blast doing it. Best finish was 18th.

Our paper is picking Spain for the world cup favorite. I do not follow soccer, sorry Willy, football enough to know who has a good chance. I will be watching though. The games they pick to watch are South Africa vs Mexico june 11, England vs USA june 12, Italy vs Paraguay june 14, Ivory Coast vs Portugal june 15 and Brazil vs Portugal june 25. I will be trying to watch these games.  8)

That is all for now.

Yes, football, or fussball, or le foot, or futbol is the beautiful game. The World Cup starts tomorrow, which is one of the few genuinely global games. England have a very good manager, who may make the difference this time, even if it goes to the dreaded penalties again. My English half would like to see them avoid their customary underachievement. My French side would like to forget that they cheated their way into the finals, and hope they don't embarass themselves. I would like to see those underachievers, Holland or Spain, win. Holland, especially have come heartbreakingly close twice before, when they played the beautiful game at its best.
It's a fact that since the World Cup began in 1930, one of the big 4 of Brazil, Germany, Italy and Argentina has been in every final. It would be nice to hope for a final between two teams outside that cartel.
Football (for this is indeed the name of the game) has given me more drama, joy, heartbreak, exhilaration, and appreciation of the grace and artistry than any TV programme or film. As the late, great Bill Shankly said, "Football is not a matter of life and death. It's much more important than that"
 Ha ha!

I'd say it was a fair result, Mexico dominated the first half and could just have easily have won it if they capitalised.

I got up at 2:30 am to watch England vs USA. If not for Rob Green's howler, this would have been a comfortable win for England. However, it would also have papered over some of the cracks in the England team so maybe a draw is the best result in the long run. I just pray to God that Jamie Carragher does not play again in central defence. He is a massive liability and will be exposed against better teams. Just gotta hope for a 0-0 draw between Algeria and Slovenia tonight so it leaves England (and the US) in the driving seat.

Found this in the Globe and Mail today,

Why call it Soccer

"Why call it soccer?" Brian Phillips writes for Slate.com online magazine. "It is an abbreviation of 'association football.' Both soccer and American football come from the same set of precursor sports, which became popular in upperclass English schools in the early 19th century and spread across the Atlantic. ... Ultimately, the version adopted as standard in the United Kingdom came to be known as 'association football,' while another set of rules won out in the United States. Thus the Americans took to calling their gridiron variety 'football,' and referred to the British sport by the slang term 'soccer,' derrived from the 'soc' in 'association.'"

I guess I found some useless trivia. 8)

Very Funny Mike , thank you .. love it .

So tomorrow's Game is at 4:30 am . So what does a good German do , well ... get up of course and watch it . Being German , does NOT allow you to miss any of the National Team games , no matter what time it is . I even have my Vuvuzela ready ( german colours ) and I have warned Qing , I'll blow it each time there is a Goal for the Fatherland ( thanks Rhonald ) . It does take a little practice to come up with a good sound out of it . I'll make sure my Neighbors hear it also .
Then , it's of to work half asleep and watch the US game right after . As if that wasn't enough .. England plays at noon ( Lunch time ) . I guess there wont be much work getting done , but then .. it's Friday .

Ps: As a side note ; it's ok for Germany to stop doing anything at all while a Game is on . So , good thing the US is does not make Soccer their number one Sport or it would halt all 50 States and that is much worse then little ole Germany . haha

Pudolski .. Pudolski .. it wasn't his Day and they let him shoot the PK ? Klose should have been taken out with the Yellow , not to risk him missing a Game . Now , it will get excited in that Group . If Australia beats Ghana all will have three points with  Germany the better Goal-difference . Thanks God for that 4:0 win in the first Game , could be the difference at the end .

Well tomorrow morning I will need to be up early at 5:30 to watch Nederland play followed by our first game in the ball hockey tournament here in Calgary. Finally it looks like the rain will be gone for little Rony to play  ::)

Well all I can say is that all teams so far have a draw so we are all equal top or bottom of our group whichever way you want to look at it.   But we have had less goals scored against us than the Americans or Slovenians.   But wait for 2014 we will be ready for the fight back.

I gotta laugh at the English media well television pundits...

Tonight they were talking about how bad the team played so far, making all the usual excuses.

Then it was mentioned that WHEN they beat Slovenia and top the group, the fans won't even care that how bad they played, and everything will be back on track to WIN IT...hahaha

Sorry you english supporters, but you gotta laugh!!!... ;D ;D ;D

I know I shouldn't really slag your team about their playing so far, considering WE (SCOTLAND) never reached it (again)... But I just wanted you to know that THIS is how bad we feel when we do reach the finals...  However, at least we have the decency to have a Glorious Failure...hahaha ;D

Well what a terrible weekend for Australian sport, firstly losing to England in the rugby by one point, someone should break Johny Wilkisons legs that's twice he has done this.  Then 1-1 against Ghana, and another red card.  But that tackle by the Ghana player was worse than Tim Cahill's and the player only got a yellow card!  Has FIFA got a hidden agenda that unless you are a powerhouse of world football you will never cop a break?

Well I can dream that we will beat Serbia by about 10 goals and make the next round.

You brits try to put american football down and say that rugby is rough, (smiles)  well consider that in rugby, you don't have a 300 lb
guy coming at you like a freight train, with his equelly huge and nasty friends behind him, wearing heavy protective gear, huge
knarly meat hooks clenching and unclenching, hot breath coming from a reinforced helmet looking like a steam train, and only one
thought on these guy's minds is to end your short life if you have the ball and if you get caught.  Running with the ball is of course
an option, but if you run, run for your life.  Then there is the dog pile.  To experence this, jack up a cross town buss and lay under it,
now let the buss down on your chest (you also need to fill it with large people first.)

Now in rugby, they all hug each other around the ball, like good friends from the pub (which they usually are) and decide who is
buying the next round.  (this is actually a small neighborhood gossip session) No protective gear (cause there all skinny and hardly weigh anything).  And they can kick the ball while running (which confuses the soccer players) and you score a run when you have the ball and run into the pub across the street. (game resumes after the first 3 beers). At the end of the game, they look all beat up
because the real fight was to get a place at the bar.  After the game they stagger off the field (from the beer chugging contest) and with smiles on their faces, back to the pub. No one is actually hurt, until he go's home to face his wife (ie: see Andy
Capp cartoon).

In American football they go back to the lockerroom to count the heads they ripped off during the game and like a animal trainer
the coach throws them a piece of raw meat to knaw on.... ;D ;D ;D

Rocky well said and i am glad you put a pic of my good freind on here who was as mean as they could get on the field
but in real life just as crazy  hahahaha   go steelers  but then again to each his own and we will never convince them
of this as they have been brought up to think their game is the toughest just like we do

china has just entered the nfl as the buffalo bills just drafted a lineman from china number 77
his jersey has already sold out and is in back order

6 ft 5 inches 320 pds  now were did he come from in china?? dont see that here
but it will be interesting to see if he makes the team and if he does when i go back i will
but a few of his jerseys in the small size to sell here because they will take great pride in his
accomplishments and not criticize the game

having been a steelers fan since i was i kid and went to forbes field with my dad and grandfather i think a miss injustice
is that people talk about how great the steelers were thru the 70's and early 80 and 81 but fail to talk about how great
the bills were during the late 80's and early 90's because they lost 4 super bowls in a row. that should not diminish that
they were one great team during this time and should have more people in the hall right now.

England and USA through to the final 16 of the World Cup. Phew!
And I am currently watching the longest tennis match in tennis history at Wimbledon, between John Isner and Nicolas Mahut.
As it stands, it is 39 games all in the final set! They have been playing for 7 and a half hours. John Isner has served 80 aces. All records. Correct that, 40:39 in the final set to Isner. How these guys haven't collapsed with exhaustion is beyond me.

Chong you are so right, I wish the Royals would take the time to develop some Japanese and Korean players.  We actually have brought in a few.  Hedeki Nomo is the most notable, but it was the end of his career.  They really know how to play fundemental baseball.

Man it is the truth Kauffman Stadium is absolutely beautiful.  I have been to some of the newer stadiums, Busch, Camdenton, but hey dont compare.  I was able to be part of the renovations of the stadium the last couple of years, I worked for the contractor that did the concrete work.  So I actually npw have some blood sweat and tears in that stadium.

When I get over to China to teach I want to start a baseball league.  It is a real dream.

No Crystal,  Football is a game where the object is to tear up the grass, that the "groundskeeper" spent all week babying to
grow back from the previous week of carnage.  >:(

The only time the grounds keeper is happy, is when winter comes and no one bothers the grass, he is although happy that his
job is never ending...... ;D

Title: Re: SPORTS !!!
Post by: rockycoon on June 29, 2010, 01:47:20 am
Crystal, let me explain the difference between golf and american football.

In golf, the players wear these specially made shoes with steel spikes in them so they can stab the grass and try to kill the roots,
next that failing, they take clubs of steel and beat the grass silly taking huge tufts of grass and sending it screaming in pain to the
next hole.  That failing to work, they beat it to death with these clubs as if the grass had somthing to do with them missing this
tiny white ball that was sitting on the grass or in some cases they run a wooden spike into the grass to set this tiny ball on. This is
called tee'ing off (and when they miss the little white ball they are really tee'ed off).  Then they ususally have several people with
them which try to squish the grass and spike it also.  Then if that's not enough, they drive a 1000 lb cart over it to finish the job.
Later the grounds keeper (you remember him from football above) starts looking for them with a rope in his hand (he is not very
happy)  meanwhile, these guys jump in there english sports cars and beat it out of the park to the bar to brag about how much
damage they have done, and keep it written on these little score cards.  laughing as they drive away, drunk from too much to
drink, in what they call the "club house".  The club house is the place where they keep all the files to "sharpen" all those clubs for
the next day of beating the grass.

Now in football, its not so bad.  They just bury the head of the opposing player in the grass and leave it.  If he lives through this

ordeal they get to do it agian. ;D ;D ;D :o Now for more information on this contact scotish rob.  The scotistish are pros at doing
this...LOL LOL

I hope Holland wins as they haven't won before. Realistically, I think Brazil, Argentina or Spain will win ... not that I follow soccer at all. I think it's a boring sport but I know that lots of strategy & stamina are involved in the game.

I was shocked that Holland played a physical match. After getting 5 yellow cards, I thought they were going to be followed by red cards. Imagine playing with 5 guys ejected. Felt sorry for the Spanish guy who got kicked in the chest ... Ouch. Though I was rooting for Holland, Spain deserved the win.

All in all, it was a boring match. With all the physical play, I thought I was watching a hockey game. I was hoping for the penalty shootout.

I read that Carl went to the Nascar hauler on Saturday night after the race and explained his side of the deal and it was a end of the subject deal.

Here is a quote from an article on nascar.com "After meeting with Edwards in the NASCAR hauler, Nationwide Series director Joe Balash attributed the final-lap crash to hard racing.  "I think at the last lap there was a lot of hard racing going on," Balash said. "There was some movement on the racetrack. It was a tough finish for a really great race."

I doubt anything will be done but we will know for sure Wednesday.  That is traditionally when the Nascar governing body makes their decisions public.  Personally I think Edwards did the right thing.  BK has been running over people for the last 3 years and it has increased since he entered Nextel Cup.  It appears Edwards has had enough of BK and isn't taking any more.  I saw where Truex Jr is talking about doing the same thing.  People keep running over him and he is tired of it.

Dave,

Nascar did deal with it.  Yesterday they fined CE $25,000.00 and 100 driver and owner points.  They put him on probation until Dec. 31st.  They also put BK on probation but he was not fined nor did he loose points.   That tells me that they thought both were equally wrong but CE got more because he caused a big wreck destroying many cars.

I've noticed that BK likes to wreck people but when people wreck him he and his father get bent out of shape.

There's only one sport in the whole World worth watching........Cricket  :D :D :D

This year its the Ashes series......yippee !!

How the He** do I explain Cricket to my Chinese wife  ?????????

"The Definition of Cricket as Explained to an American:

You have two sides, one out in the field and one in.

Each man that's in the side that's in goes out, and when he's out he comes in and the next man goes in until he's out.

When they are all out, the side that's out comes in and the side that's been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out.

Sometimes you get men still in and not out.

When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in. There are two men called umpires who stay all out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out.

When both sides have been in and all the men have been out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game.

For Willy ...and any other Cricket fans...and also for Jason in Aus

Here is a comment on the last English Team to play for the Ashes...probably fits the latest lot too !!!

Eleven men have been arrested in Sydney on a range of charges including impersonating a cricket team, loitering and receiving money under false pretences.

They are likely to be extradited and face charges in England in relation to the 2007 theft of the Ashes and a number of Queen's Honours. In one case, a man played just 5 days cricket and scored only 17 runs before absconding with an MBE. Police will also interview the suspects in relation to a joyride in stolen open-topped buses.

The group's activities have been closely monitored since they arrived in Australia some weeks ago. Initially the suspects were difficult to identify as they arrived in Australia with the apparent bona fides to qualify as a quality cricket team. However it became obvious to observers that all was not as it seemed during the first warm-up match.

Further suspect behaviour was observed in Brisbane, culminating in a series of criminal acts on the 5th day at Adelaide, including reckless batting, pedestrian bowling and unimaginative captaincy. Police allowed the group to operate while further evidence was gathered in Perth, Melbourne and Sydney.

Interpol have been asked to assist in locating the ringleader who has seemingly disappeared. He may be using the name Fletcher and is believed to be heading to South Africa to prey upon unsuspecting cricketers who have some ancestral links to England. Parents are warned not to sign contracts and young cricketers should refrain from accepting money or other incentives.

In an incident related to the 2005 Ashes theft, a crystal replica of the Ashes was presented to the Australian cricket team today. The actual trophy is being withheld by a shadowy group called the MCC who believe they own cricket. Two undercover operatives known only as Beefy and Branson are working to return the urn to its rightful owners Australia...where it can reside for ever in the Hallowed Halls of the MCG.  ;D ;D ;D

Cricket Ah yes it is a wonderful bait. I have caught hundreds of fish with them.
Been looking at some Baseball myself. It looks like its a good thing Texas is going home for the next 2 games. They won't have so far to go home and cry about the loss of the series.

I used to watch NFL games .... but this year the Bills are having the perfect season, at 0 - 6, every other team has found a way to win at least one game .... but not the Bills !  Fans are not showing up to games, and some that do, wear paper bags over their head.   :(

Here Mike, just so you don't feel so bad.... hahaha!!

Pardon the language in it.

I never much understood golf.  You whack this little ball.  Then you chase after it, and whack it again.  You should be thrilled you found the ball after whacking it away the first time...put it in your pocket, and go home!

Martin, I can't believe you would say something like that.  Golf is a intellectual game.  If you are stupid enough to take up the game you'll get smart enough to make excuses for it or find more time to play it.  ;D  Actually I do enjoy playing if you can call it that.  Most of the time it is an exercise in futility.  Before you start you say, guys I love this game and after 18 holes you say guys I hate this game.

I used to play the game but I gave it up to find a Chinese wife.

Micheal Vick's looking good, the Eagles may finally have a chance at the Super Bowl ... the first possible victory for coach Andy Reid.

I always knew Vick was a superb QB, he just got sidetracked by the dog betting scandal. North Americans animal lovers/PETA would have a hairy fit if they knew how dogs are slaughtered for food in China. I witnessed it right in front of my apartment. It's not a pretty sight.

First a T-shaped rod is jabbed into the throat. If that doesn't work, they saw the throat. If that doesn't work, they bash the skull with a tree stump several times. Then they pour hot scaling water into the ears.

What Vick did [ betting ] pales in comparison. Bottom line is he's a great athlete. People will forget about his dog scandal if he helps bring a championship. Many NFL teams wanted him except for the publicity/public relations. I bet they're regretting that right now.

The second biggest Sporting event next to the Olympics is taking place in China and I have not heard a peep on here about it.  The 16th Asian Games organised by the same person who is responsible for Olympics everywhere in the world.  Two weeks time he is off to UK to work on olympics.

Mind you I cannot get into solo syncronised swimming  How do they tell if she is out of step with her self?

Athletics now well underway.  How do those gymnast get their legs so far apart?

How come the crowds watching one event - China versus Korea were delirious with excitement. I never knew archery would be so thrilling!!!  But China lost and that quieten them down.

And the Yemeni woman 400 metre runner in full hood, long sleeves and trousers running in a heat and in the heat. came in about 30 seconds or more after 2nd to last person finished.  Still its the taking part not the winning!!!!!!!!!

And the iraqi runner with the strange body belt.  Why did all the others pull out of that heat?

Maybe I give an update later on the pairs blindfolded sword twirling competition.

Willy,

You can tell if she is out of step with herself by the ripples in the water. If the ripples cross themselves, she is out of step with herself...hehehe.

It is interesting that nobody here has made mention about the Asian games.

The Asian Games aren't often broadcast a lot outside of Asia (I guess they don't realise the market outside or want too much money from the networks to re-broadcast).  I have seen snippets on a few of the news channels (News1 and BBC Sports), but nothing more than a passing mention.

If you're in Asia, you can get information from Channel News Asia...they would be broadcasting it.

Incredible run for the LA Kings! Fan since '73 with many up's and down's, including '93's failed attempt to bring the silver Cup to LA.
I think, tonight is the "Night".. we here in Hockey Town West will lift/hold/fill/raise and finally will get to Celebrate the finest of all Cup's.
These last two months were something for my LaoPo to learn, that we here take our favourite very serious. As she was saying at the start of the Play-off.... HOCKEY AGAIN?.... as I placed myself in front of the TV and let me tell you.. I was not holding back on the yelling and screaming for my Kings either.

I have a sportacious few months ahead of me.

Now I have Eurosport and BBC TV available to me I have just completed the Tour of Italy cycle race.  I am part way through the French Open Tennis, part way through the Dauphine cycle race from France.  I have the Euro 2012 football starting tomorrow for a month then comes the Stella Artois tennis, followed by Wimbledon, The Tennis Championship, for a couple of weeks then the  Tour de France for three weeks then into the Olympics for a month.  There is also the Formula 1 Grand Prixs and Nascar. Then I have to fill in the odd games of Rugby and Cricket.

No time for the minor sports like the one country sports of basket ball, ice hockey. baseball and of course American football.

Not sure about the Eagles and the Crows David but I am told that the Budgies ripped the Canaries apart last week.  That will teach them to sing the wrong tune.

I think I better get into training.

Not sure what ya'll are talking about but in America where the real athletes are;

Finch is tired of beating around the Busch and contemplating getting rid of it.  Johnson is rising up again in prominence.  Jeffie wonders how everything went soft while Jr has seen it a little more solid lately and sees the chance of it rising up.  Although... Biff like being on top.

David, I have been in serious training for this coming few months.

I have achieved a personal best for the 'viewing marathon'. That is getting comfortable, putting feet up, opening beer without looking away from screen, exiting contents from bottle to throat, conveying at least one burp every five minutes to the outside world, using spoons for food as chopsticks can cause serious injury if used without thought.  That is all capped by shouting in English at the screen if English speakers do good or bad, in Chinese if any Chinese does good or bad or in Spanish if any American takes part (just to make them feel at home).

I went for the down to earth GB mags.  Slappers monthly, Soho Sexpots and similar non informative Porno publications.  You have to remember that I lived through a generation when genitalia was airbrushed out before any photos were published.   For my teenage years I went through a period when I thought the women in mags were all freaks because seeing nothing was not what I was seeing in real life.

Been a good week Sports wise.

We have a Brit into tomorrows final of the Wimbledon Tennis Championship. The last time was even before I was born as it was 74 years ago.  Plus a Brit has taken the yellow jersey in the Tour de France.  The sports event with the largest number of spectators for any sporting even in the world.  Millions line the streets.   (Looks like they may well be soon removing all of the American Lance Armstrongs winning records from that event.)

I am against any of that. Either bribes or drugs.  GB have two people in their huge squad who have served bans as Drug Cheats and I would prefer that they were not not selected.

I think that all taking part in London Olympics will be the amongst the largest number ever tested for drugs at any event.   UK even built a brand new testing facility for that.   I think that there may be a few surprises in that quarter.

And for Shaun.  Isn't it about time that the USA should follow Russia and make each state enter as a separate country?  But them the Olympics are really more than just 'track and field' so we will see who collects the highest number of the 312 gold medals that are available.

I think that maybe USA could come second to my adoptive country 'China'.

One Question!  Eurosport is showing 24 hours a day Olympics so when do I actually get any sleep.

Title: Re: SPORTS !!!

Willy I know you are against bribes.  I am the same way.  I was only joking.  I am against the drugs too.  The drug testing capabilities have come a long way.  Unfortunately so has the methods of hiding them.

I'm sure there will be several who are caught from all countries.  Of recent issues here in the baseball world I can't imagine that a professional baseball player wouldn't know if illegal substances were being injected into his body.

This morning I read last night a nascar driver was suspended for testing positive for a banned drug.  In nascar they do random testing.  :o  If I were driving a race car at 200mph I'd want every driver tested before every race.

The separate states issue I won't comment on because I don't know anything about it.

As far as the rest?  May the best American country win!  ;D

Title: Re: SPORTS !!!
Post by: Rhonald on July 08, 2012, 10:34:50 am
Although I an also against bribing in sports, I have to scratch an itch and apply an ointment to prevent a rash when it comes to drugs in sports.

My opinion is that drug research, fueled by the desire to win, pushes the boundaries of medical research. I hate it when children are used by certain state governments to push for the medal counts. The young athletes usually have no knowledge of what is being done to them and it is the Sports program that is the cheat. For older athletes, both professional and amateur, I rather see the individual athlete as being part of the risk/reward process.

When it comes to sports enhancing drugs, the libido has been a prime member receiving doses of stimulants to improve its function. The research that lead to these new products are a direct carry over from the field of sports drug research.

And for the Java junkies: caffeine used to be one of the substances checked for by the IOC but the World Anti-Doping Agency removed caffeine from its list of banned substances in 2004. A urinary test that returned an amount of 12 micrograms of caffeine per milliliter was considered by the IOC as a deliberate attempt to gain an advantage. Although not banned, it is still being checked for and should the WADA find enough athletes that have an elevated level of caffeine in their system, they will revisit their policy to determine whether it should go back on their list of banned substances.

I await your jittery response.  :o

I dont want to talk about cycling just now..... :-[ :-[ :-[

But what on Earth makes you describe Gillard as a "winner" ???? She got her position by knifing Kevin (the mouth) Rudd and by doing a crippling deal with the Greens (who actually run the Country now).

She and her Party never got a mandate from the voters, due to our incredibly stupid electoral Laws, her "Government" got into power on a minority vote...just because that unwanted hang-up from the Colonial days (the Governer-General) invited her to try to form a Govenment AGAINST the wishes of the people.

Now lets talk about that OTHER stupid woman...the Governor -General....or maybe not, my blood pressure cant take it. You Brits should get out of our lives, we have grown past this archaic nonsense.

We certainly got something in common now.  A party without a majority taking control with a coalition with a minor party.  But as they will this is likely to have a disasterous effect on that minor party. At every local election since they have been pushed from 1st place to 3rd place.

Plus they want to get rid of our unelected House of Lords, which a large number of the leading party does not.

Like Australia the UK is due for some interesting times ahead. ;)

The first Englishman ever to win the Tour de France succeeded today.

I know just how CHUFFED you Aussies were last year as Evans was then the first Aussie  to do the same.  That's about 100 hours of the race I have watched this past three weeks. I am so pleased I bought a second laptop recently.   One for work and one for pleasure.

The British Open Golf ends tomorrow and then the Olympics.

Has there been much on TV in other parts of the World about the London Olympics.  I know British TV is full of it but I am surprised just how much has been on in China about it - many full length programmes and adverts in nearly every advert session.  Been going on for weeks.  Hong Kong is going to show about 10 hours a day on each of two channels.

Now to throw a cat amongst the pidgeons.......

Yes an Englishman may win the Tour De France......finally....remember an Aussie beat you to the punch.....the English started a yacht race for a 100 guinea cup and lost it......it took the Aussies to finally win it back for the Commonwealth from the US...

Just like many sports that has been invented by the United Kingdom.....cricket, golf, cycling, various codes of football, etc....the UK may invent these games, but it takes them a hell of a long time to be any good at them....

Your right there Jason.  We English take our time to work on things and then get them right.  My Dad was in China for two years in the late 1920's but it took me a long time after until I actually arrived here!

But when I did it ended up right.  Look at me waiting all those years before tying the knot!

So your correct it takes the English a long time to get things right.

Lets hope we get the forthcoming Olympics right as its costing 15 billion dollars!

I will say that when the Aussies staged them that was a defining turning point in the production of them. You showed the World the way and following that China is probably the hardest to compete with as their opening and closing ceremonies may well be the best ever.

David you pain me and to think I stayed up last night geeing on an Australia to win the British Open. Andrew Scott was 4 Strokes up at 16 he then lost them all and let a South African overtake him.

Or do you not want to talk about Golf. ;D ;D ;D

OK So back to Le Tour.  His father could have been American and we would still have forgiven him (possibly given time::) )after winning a 88 hours bike racing over three weeks with the highest spectator numbers for any sporting event anywhere in the World.

I'm a big Dodger fan (baseball) but I don't have a TV, so because I live in the market area of the dodgers (los angeles) MLB (major league baseball) blocks the games on the net! So what I did was download "hide my IP address" as that is how MLB determines your local viewing restrictions...works great! I can watch any game at anytime!

I use a Proxy server to View British TV over here in China.

The BBC have upgraded their iplayer with lots of channels and it is perfect here now.  Eurosport is even better with 3 sport channels.

I probably could get more but have not time to look.  Just waiting for the Olympics to officially start on Friday.

However the women' football has already started.  With one great controversy.  The North Koreans were due to kick off at 7.45 last night. in the warm up they showed the team pictures, player by player, and each had the South Korea flag against their name!!!!!

Result - a diplomat incident - kickoff delayed for one hour until the technicians could redo the initial warm up with correct flags showing.

I have just watched the full four hour of the 2012 London Olympic Opening Ceremony.

It was full of interest and humour.  Even our Octogenerian Queen 'parachuted' in from a helicopter assisted by James Bond! ;D

There were many things that stuck a chord with me as I vaguely remember the 1948 London Olympics that cost less than 1 million dollars and it made a profit.  Today's event cost something like 15 billion dollars.  Whether it makes a profit or not it was money well spent so far. Just hope our Olympians can match up to the event.

I am now going to watch it all again as there was so much to see I am sure that I missed something and frankly it will be worth seeing twice.

Maybe you did not get the theme behind it.

It started out as the Country being a green and pleasant land.  Then making way for the Industrial Revolution then through the first World War, Suffragettes campaigning for votes for women (our women has had the vote for less than 100 years to date). Then on through modern days through the music and mixed with British Humour.

It was such great planning to change the green fields into the industrial site.

It was a poignant day for Londoner.  We had great jubilation in London the day that it was announced that we had won the bid.  The next day that jubilation turned to pain as 4 bombs exploded in London. 3 on the Underground trains and 1 on a bus killing 53 people and injuring hundreds of others.

We had two friends injured but it was made worse by the fact that no one could get hold of these two when we knew they were going to use a tube train that day.  But thankfully after several hours we found that they were in hospital and only slightly injured.

It was sad to see Muhammad Ali in that state at one point his nurse held him tight so h never fell over. :(

Anyway good luck to all the contestants ;D ;D ;D

The Queen not smiling! Of course what did you expect.  She had just seen that it was a Scotsman that was carrying our flag. ;D ;D  And at her age it was a late night.

Agree about Ali though but maybe it was his choice. He is still very popular in the UK.

Talking about Ali, it didn't even look like him.  Back in '96 when he lit the torch in Atlanta he looked bad but it looked like him.  It is sad to see.  At least he has the money to be well cared for.

I thought the Rowan Atkinson was a nice touch.  Even Peggy knew who he was and loves him.

Atlanta was a good games Shaun.  I remember Ali there and even then we thought he looked rough. But us Brits have a soft spot for him and although we were sorry to see him in that state we were happy that he was still going 16 years later, albeit in a much poorer condition.  Maybe he would have prefered to go earlier rather than go through what he has had to abide.

Atlanta was good, cannot say the same about Los Angeles in 1984 but as that was only a stand in event then maybe that was an excuse to just use stand by locations.  But I will say the organisers who took it on made a good profit for themselves and a little for sporting charities.  This the 23rd Olympiad was the first of the heavy sponsored modern events. But as that was at the height of the cold war and 14 teams akined to Russia not appearing after the USA failed to go to Moscow then that was expected.

Now the 30th Olympiad currently being held in London has the highest amount of countries represented. In fact there are more countries at the London Olympics than are members of the United Nations.

Did you who saw the opening ceremony of the London Games understand the concept of it?

I didn't answer that same question before for no apparent reason but yes I did get the concept of the opening and the industrial revolution. I figured you forgot who you where asking? ha  But what I didn't know is there was a segment cut out for the US audience??

NEW YORK (AP) — The choreographer of a somber segment in the London Olympics opening ceremony said Saturday he's disappointed that NBC decided not to show it to an American audience.

Spectators were asked to display photos of loved ones who could not be there during the segment. The music, a hymn called "Abide With Me," was described in the ceremony's program as an "honest expression of the fear of approaching death."

NBC producers did not air it, instead showing American viewers Ryan Seacrest's interview with swimmer Michael Phelps.

"I am disappointed," said Londoner Akram Khan, who choreographed and danced in the segment. "I am really sad that I couldn't show the work in America, and that really upsets me, because I don't think it's any more or less than the other pieces. It brings to mind the question ... that maybe it's too truthful."

The ceremony's program describes the performance as dramatizing "the struggle between life and death using such powerful images of mortality as dust and the setting sun."

Some in the British press have interpreted the segment as being a tribute to victims of bomb attacks in July 2005 that killed 52 commuters and four suicide bombers on London's transit network. During the BBC live coverage of the ceremony, commentator Hazel Irvine made the connection while the dance was taking place: "The excitement of that moment in Singapore seven years ago when London won the games was tempered with great sorrow the very next day," when the terror attacks took place, she said.

NBC said it had no indication that the segment was a reference to the terrorist attacks.

Although in many places the ceremony was aired in full, NBC aired it on a tape-delayed basis and made editing changes. The network said there are often such production decisions when showing a taped version of a ceremony.

"Our program is tailored for the U.S. television audience," said NBC Sports spokesman Greg Hughes. "It's a credit to (ceremony director) Danny Boyle that it required so little editing."

Oh well...

Vince. There was no indication on the full length show that that section was for the victims of the bombs just announcing it was for people no longer able to enjoy the Olympics.  Of course the London bombings were appropriate as we was still celebrating the news the previous day of London being awarded the games.

The following week another group attempted the same thing but were foiled. This put the City on high alert commuters were traveling in fear and when misleading information was supplied following surveillance an innocent man was shot dead by a police officer on an underground train.

The photo's came on and went by in mass very quickly.

Rhonald, I could not decide who was the most appropriate person to light it but the result surprised every, especially the bookmakers who returned the money placed in best on various choices.

China still ahead with 4 gold but that will change when the more middle of the road and prestige events take place but I think China is now surprising people in the swimming pools.

Yes I heard about the bookmakers, having a spine, did the decent job of returning the bets on who was to be the candlemaker.

My memory has failed me because I remember twice seeing a Canadian presence in the shows opening, one being the Poppy. Its symbol because of the poem "In Flander's Field" written during the First World War by Canadian physician Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae. But I can not recollect the second time I uttered - that's Canadian not British.

Alas, being Canadian, I always feel a kindred spirit to England as its traditions has shaped our country. I am not Anglo Saxon but feel that I am, maybe because of the Scarlett Red Tunic our RCMP wear, or maybe seeing the Queens profile on portraits on walls and our currency. During my cadet years I wore that old fashioned woollen Battle Tunic from the WW2 era - dam did it itch - so I believe I have England in my blood.

I liked the part of the speech where he referenced to being England as the birth place of the modern Olympics because of the spirit of fair play being codified.

But I look forward to hearing from the New Zealanders whose small team are well above them on the medal table.  I hear one Aussie Newspaper has left New Zealand off the table they publish  because of their position well above the Aussie squad. :-[

Nice to hear that that non human Michael Phelps is retiring after this one. Gives a lot more people the chance in future. ;)

Only 7 gold medals for Oz!! Not our best olypmics ever, but lets try and justify it a little........7 / 21 million = 4 million.......so for every 4 million people in Oz we got a gold.......

US say 300 million people 300 million / 44 = 6 million (approx)...

so does this mean that actually Oz is still better at sports???

Not quite Jason

They have established that Grenada has the honour of having most gold per person pro rata to population.

Well at the end of a day the Olympics were a triumph for sport, a triumph for London and a triumph Britain.

U.S. President Barack Obama might rest soundly on Sunday night in the knowledge his country topped the medals table at the London Games, but he might be slightly put out to discover that as a head of state he still comes second to Britain's queen.

Thanks to her role as head of state for 16 countries, Queen Elizabeth is the world leader whose athletes have won more gold medals at London 2012 than any other and in her diamond jubilee year too. That's 48 golds for Elizabeth to Obama's 46.

Alongside Britain's 29 golds, only six of the queen's other countries were needed to top the medal count with seven from Australia, five from New Zealand, four from Usain Bolt and his fellow Jamaicans and one each from Bahamas, Canada and Grenada.

Willy I don't think Obama is resting soundly.  He is upset but not for the reasons you state.  It is because America won to many metals.  In his mind America should not win that many metals.  America isn't that great.

I know it is political but...    ::) :P

Get off the Southern Comfort Shaun - they are medals not metals. ;D ;D ;D ;D  But suppose gold is a metal. ::)

Mind you they are solid gold and heavy.  They should help the balance of payments a little.

Dont want to rain on your parade Jase....

But 21 divided by 7 = 3 !!!!!!!!!....which makes the population rate per gold medal even more favourable.  But I think we all know that in Aus, these athletes are getting too much money, too much "fame", too much Facebook, too much Twitter....and not enough Graft and blood, sweat and tears.  Offering an athlete $1 million for winning a gold medal is the end of a long slippery slide (IMHO)

Cheers...David

Oh the humiliation of it all.  I've been had by my own self.  Yes Willy, I know the difference and am surprised I made the mistake.

But then again if that makes you feel better because your country won fewer medals than mine did then I accept this rebuke for whirled peas.  ;D

Rain away Dave, math is not my strong suit, I only use math when I buy something to make sure I recieved the correct change....but you are right, get off your high horse athletes until you can prove you can compete with the rest of the world not just turn up and expect to given free reign of the winning dias.

Willy.  It is a European sport.  Don't you think it is about time you won once in a while?  Even Americans can slip up every now and then so don't gloat too much.

If it were not for an American Police officer the Europeans would not have won.  Rory McIlroy almost ruined it for ya'll.

I like to see the USA win now and then.  After all it is one of the very very few big sporting events where the USA can take on International Matches.

I will be honest and say that I thought the Americans would win so I went to bed before the end as I could not take any more of the bad audience behaviour of cheering rubbish shots by the home side and booing good shots by the Europeans.   Americans need to learn a lot about sportsmanship!

BUT I was happy in the morning when I heard of the comeback.

I am watching The Australian open tennis championships on UK TV here.

But where have all the Aussie and US top tennis players gone?  I miss the likes of Sampras, Conners, McEnroe and Agassi. And of course Laver and the down under boys.

If it was not for the Williams sisters then we would not hear from either country these days.  I wonder which Nationality won the US Open AND the Olympic title in 2012. ::)

Shaun the Rory McIlroy you say nearly lost the Ryder cup for us certainly picked up a nice little earner this week. 250 million dollars over ten years for wearing clothes!  Looks like he has taken over from Tiger Woods.

I see that the billionaire owner of the Jacksonville Jaguars has bought Fulham FC my second choice from the English Football clubs.  We now have six of the top flight clubs owned by American owners.  Maybe the future is in football.

Lets hope more money is spent than the previous Billionaire did.

Getting back to China . The biggest clubs in the UK are finding that visiting China pre-season is certainly the place to find new converts to Association Football.  The big four are all coming to Asia in the next week or so.

I think Broad should have walked. This game should not become like others 'win at any cost'. He knew exactly what he had done.

Alas Willy, the noble "Gentleman's" game has also fallen prey to the money grabbers, posers and un-sportsmanlike predators that control modern sport of ANY kind.

Having said that, I (and most Aussies) are really pi###ed off at the way our "premium" cricketers cant seem to get their act together.

Yes, Broad should have walked, but 10 years ago, Warne or McGrath would have got him next ball...and our top order would have made enough runs to make his dismissal irelevant !!!

Those were the days.  When five days meant five days.
The first day of this one made me think of when I was watching Kent v Northants at Maidstone in June 1976 and during that day I saw 16 wickets fall, but there was a snowfall in June, during the lunch break, so being cold was an excuse.  But first day at Trent Bridge was very good warm weather.

Well I do have to congratulate the USA Football team in reaching the last 16 knockout stage of the World Cup.

England, :'( Italy, Portugal and 2010 winners, Spain, all out.  Sorry David forgot that Australia are out as well.

England played rubbish and deserve to be out. :-[ Whereas the USA team deserve to be in that last 16. ::) The thousands of Americans who made the trip to Brazil to support their team have certainly been rewarded.

Thank you America.  After watching 16 Formula 1 Grand Prix' throughout the World this season it was number 17 in Texas that was the most exciting of all.

Up and down hills lots of twists and turns but firstly a track for overtaking and was there overtaking, never seen so much in a Grand Prix.
